Euro coil/ballast resistor/starter bypass box (Tom Jones)

I think, when I look at the Euro wiring diagrams, I do not see a ballast resistor or a starter bypass box.

Does that mean the coil wiring just bypasses the ballast resistor and the starter bypass box? Green directly to one side of the coil?

I am looking about going from the Blue coil to the black as Tom Jones suggested on my touring.

Bill - you could just paint the "blue" coil black as an easy fix unless your car needs another type of coil for proper performance.

I compared the "Blue" coil I once purchased for my tii to the "Blue" sports coil on my VW - they are not the same Bosch part numbers.

Bill,

If you will look on page 7 of the manual Bill Redszus sent you when he sent back your Kugelfishcher pump, he tells you "never, ever use a blue coil"with the Kuglefishcher. For high speed performance or engines with higher compression ratios us a Bosch Red Coil.

You have an out standing car, good luck with the nit picking details.

Yes, I would rather see a Bosch Red coil and matching resistor in there than that blue one...... Black would be best but a proper red would be just as good.

I think Sean and I can still get proper "red" red coils, and know which make/model to order the resistor under. They did come stock on a certain European car built in Stuttgart. Will let you know by email.... Blunt should know as well. I think IMC has them in both the newer silver can AND the proper red can. We got me a new red one earlier this year after my crane XR700 and old Red coil failed on a Bay Area 02 drive.

P.S. Jeff Goss recently found a 6V blue with the proper early clay red top to it for his '67 1600-2 from a Porsche restoration shop somewhere in Canada. It works MUCH better than the NOS black one he had in there.

Tom, I am chasing after a black one. Do you know the answer about my question about the ballast resistor? THe wiring diagrams do not show one and those diagrams were pre-blue coils. So am I reading the Euro diagrams right? WIre without a ballast resistor?

Wish I knew the answer you seek. Do work on a Euro '73 Tii touring in Sacramento that's had the same owner for around 30 years and another Tii Touring here in Nor Cal. Also work on a Euro Tii at Sean's.... May be a bit before I can have a look at those cars. But..... I can have a looky at the wiring/parts diagrams now...

The wire diagram for the Euro Tii's surely shows NO ballast resistor, but that doesn't mean much as the diagrams are sometimes misleading.....

The parts book is confusing as well... looks like there was a special equipment high power ignition coil #12 138 730 002 that seems to go with a resistor #12 13 1 353 362

A quick check show that coil is NLA but the resistor is available.

Will have to look into this further as I must head off to work now.....

That is the way the EURO wiring schematics have it.

Now, wonder why the US cars have the ballast resistor to knock the power of the voltage or amps or whatever it knocks down?

Here is what we have been talking about:

The top photo shows the Euro set-up, no ballast resistor (even with a black coil) and no starter bypass relay. Also notice the coil bracket has a ground lug on it. It has a ground wire going to the block from that lug.

could it had the resistive wire like 74-76 02 models ?

i know my 74 and 76 non-touring has them, thus no visible external resistance, by-pass thru the secondary contact of the starter as well.
