Need a Car for my son

I know this is not a general bimmer forum but I trust the people on FAQ, looking for a nice clean 1980s-1990s 3 series for my son for his first car.

I don't want a POS but not a perfect car either. Hardtop or convertible. nothing with triple turboed jet motors either..he is 16 after all haha

I will be looking and buying within the next few months, and would like to see what you guys have first

Recommend for a first car, an E30 325 eta (85-88), 2 or 4 door. Most E30 automatic's are in the pik-a-part yard, after 25 years, they have gone south. Don't worry, 5 speed eta's are still around. Just check to make sure when the timing belt was changed (every 4 years or 50K), if it breaks, your engine is a boat anchor. I recently gave my teenage daughter an 86 325 2 door 5 speed as her first car. If she wanted the car, I told her that she had learn to drive a 5 speed She quickly learned and she is very good at driving a stick shift. If she can learn to drive a 5 speed, anyone can and and she has a hard time walking and chewing game at the same time. An alternate car to consider is a E28 528e (82-88) automatics are slow, 5 speeds are much better and more fun to drive. To me, the last quality BMW's are E28/E30. E36 interior's (door panels, head liner, etc...) seem cheap and fall apart after 15-20 years. I've had three E30's and I love them. My current one is a 91 4 door 318i.
