joseph you probably have a broken solder connection where the wires in the stalk meet the switch box. if you know how to solder, you can pull it and try to fix it. i bought a new one from bavauto, ~$150. BMW suppliers sell it for about $50-75 more than that. Or, get a used one for $100.

be aware though that new ones are missing the center prong in the pigtail which is where my stereo was wired through. i didn't have the time to mess around with that, so have had no stereo since i replaced it. probably will end up bypassing the ignition circuit and just wire the stereo to the hazard switch.
