Hazard Switch Faulty...affordable solutions?

Vehicle: 1975 2002 standard coupe

The red button on my hazard switch is non-functional. It will not stay in (off) position, sometimes I can get it to stay until I hit a bump and it pops back out causing my hazards to come on. Is there a cheaper solution than the OEM (costly) replacement?

Is it possible to use a regular on/off switch?

Also, what is the most economical flasher relay replacement?

Thanks for the input.

The part# for the Hazard switch for your '75 is 61 31 1 356 193. AutohausAZ.com lists it at only $55 and warranty them for a year. If you buy it through BMW you will pay more but get a 2 year warranty.

Sorry but there is no easy replacement for the hazard switch except for a new one.... But you can take it apart and bend the little lever that holds the button in straight again. If you didn't break anything it will fix the switch for a while. Or you can use the paper clip jammed in the button method......

If you can't find pictures of this repair using the search I'll pull an old switch apart and shoot a few pics; a how to if you will.

As for the relay there are some threads in here about a replacement "electronic relay"... Use the search Luke... :b...

You could also find a functional switch in the Parts for Sale section of this site. I bought a replacement hazard switch here for $10 and it works fine.

  • 2 months later...

I just unscrewed the the red portion, (the button) and then depressed the bulb until it catches, It has more lateral movement when the button is removed and will usually catch, then just used a paper shim to put the red button back in. It was free

Do you just yank it apart or is there a catch to it?

For lack of a better term, yes you have to seperate the parts. Just examine the switch and the pictures in the link above. It is pretty intuitive but make sure you have a good understanding of how the mechinism works. This will allow you to reason thru the fix of the tab which holds the switch in the depressed position. I think by pulling the switch apart and fixing the problem u will have greater confidence in the repair than if u jusf jammed something in there to make it stay off.
