spark plug wire loom?

...Which way did they come from the factory?...

While the first two photos date to August 1983 -- among my earliest surviving photos of the engine compartment -- and not 1976, this is how I remember them from the day I took delivery in 1976. Quite a few, but not necessarily all, of the '75-'76 U.S. cars had these flexible plug-wire bands of the same blue plastic used for the emissions controls wiring. The stuff is good, however, as the third photo attests, taken recently: I cleaned off the old blue bands and re-installed them. Not bad for 39 years!

Regards,

Steve

After looking at Steve's wires and the photo from good old CD, I think I have my loom clamps backwards.  Loom tube should probably be more over the valve cover no?

Yes, John, I believe the wires were always supported "over" the valve covers rather than as "outriggers". There are probably more examples of this in the service manual but below is a period photo of a 2002tii touring.

I have the tube and the holders sitting in my parts bin. It didnt fit my Kingsborne wire set so i ended up removing it and using the same rubber clamps as '76mintgrun'02

I am going to get another rubberized clamp for the fuel line, the next time I am at the hardware store.

It looks like I could add just a little length to the fuel line as well.

The fuel filter as a super custom rubber cover, cut from a skinny innertube.

It makes the plastic one blend a little better and I suppose it adds protection.

(that weird 'rust spot' was in that brand new filter... oh well, it wasn't loose, just a stain).

Drifting off topic again, sorry.

I can't find the part number for those little riser bolt things.

Damn. I like how you did this with the risers and want to copy it (with the Kingsborne tube I already have). Do you know the size of the bols? I believe they are 10mm... If so I'll just look for risers that size.

Yes, there WAS skin on my knuckles before I started the repair...

I'll keep looking for the part number this weekend.  I know they were BMW parts that I ordered from the BluntMeister (Steve Petersen).  I just need to find the e-mail.  The riser thingys have a bolt on one side and a long threaded nut on the other.

EDIT:  Found it!  They're called 'Extension' part #13-65-1-353-339

I used this thread to update spark plug wires on my 1974 Tii.  Attached are photos.  Some useful info on ordering parts;

- Spark plug wires (7mm) with loom tube is Kingsborne number 12-7405loom, priced at $53.50
- BMW parts for loom clamps and standoffs:

12121350635 pipe clamp, $4.07 each (need 2)

13651353339 standoff bolt, $6.19 each (need 2)

11617549043 cap nut, $2.37 each

Purchased all three above from ECS Tuning

The clamps fit very nicely around the Kingsborne loom tube, but the standoff bolt leaked some oil, doesn't seem to seal as well as the cap nuts.  Needed to add washer under the standoff (see photo).

Here is my loom. $5 wrecking yard. It's from a M30 BMW I believe. I just cut off the last 2 cylinders and it bolted up. You can even see it says BMW on it. I got this one just to see if it would fit. Now I plan on buying a new one since I know it fits perfectly.

  • 8 years later...

The e9 used these looms and they never used a riser so I don’t see why they would be needed here.  For fun I checked the NK parts book and they did not use the loom.
