Diverting to the Dark side of VW engines

No - I'm not planning on swapping my tii engine for a GTI one (or a TDI).

Today I re-arranged the garage for a little more room and brought out the aftermarket cylinder heads and manifolds I bought about 4 years ago for the VW. I'm getting ready to pull the engine and upgrade the heads and exhaust to something with a little more power.

Ahh THE CLASSIC DUAL PORT HEAD .

WHAT KIND OF CARBs DO YOU PLAN TO BOLT TO THOSE MANIFOLDS ?

These heads are much larger than stock VW dual port ones. Cast by Auto Linea in South America for CB Performance (used to be known as Claude's Buggies), they have 40mm intake and 35.5mm exhaust valves and have been CNC ported, opened for my 90.5mm pistons and the intake manifolds are port-matched. They also use 3/4" reach spark plugs instead of the stock 1/2" ones (plug location also moved away from the exhaust valve).

My existing Dellorto 40mm DRLA carbs will be mounted on them.

My current cylinder heads were sourced from Gene Berg. They have stock size valves (35.5mm intake, 32mm exhaust), "semi-hemi" combustion chambers and a three-angle valve job. I'm currently running a low 6.9:1 compression ratio and my oil temperature hasn't exceeded 210 deg. F even in hot weather. All stock cooling tin and thermostat are used.

can't just stick the engine from a GT2 porsche in there? ;-)

someday i will build a turbo drag bug solely for the purpose of humiliating the pony car crowd...

LOL - you don't need a turbo to do that - especially if running the 1/8th mile drags. Many years ago, we raced against a '68 Camaro at the Friday night drags and won. The car was a gutted black '67 body on '69 pan with high compression 1700 cc engine, single Holley 300cfm "Bug Spray" carb and high ratio rocker arms. Car was nicknamed "It'll Do".

Here is "It'll Do II" which is the second version (Clementine Orange '73). It runs a 1641cc with dual 40mm EMPI HPMX carbs (Weber copies). Car runs consistent 10.20's in the 1/8th mile. Not bad for an ultra low budget drag car.

Update from today after the tii fuel pressure check -

Engine has been removed, along with the complete exhaust system.

Flywheel and clutch still look good.

The trouble with taking cars apart - where do you put stuff?

pics1022010021.jpg

These will be taken apart for cleaning before mounting up to the new port-matched manifolds

Removed almost all of the cooling parts today, then switched over to the fuel tank on the tii (bad idea).

This oil cooler will be replaced. Note the bits of insulation that were blown into the cooler from the fan.

Going to have to trim these two center studs to clear the thicker intake manifolds.

  • 1 month later...

Just received notice that my new exhaust system is on the way. Will be test fitting the new heads this long weekend while waiting for the packages to arrive next week.

1.5" system with custom heater boxes (true 1.5" pipes with flanged connections), merged header collector with slip joints for wider engines and single 'quiet-power' muffler.

Here is the system before a satin black ceramic coating was applied.
