Door stop

Had the headliner replaced and now I notice that the driver's door doesn't "stop" properly and stay open. Could this have been broken? Also, how to repair this?

Thanks.

P.S. My gas sender has now been repaired and the temp gauge grounded. All working properly. Thanks for your replies on that subject.

headliner is not connected to door check strap ("stop")

unless whoever replaced the headliner made a side trip down

into your door ?

what arn't you telling us ?

now remove the door trim panel and lOOk inside

if the door brake is 28+ years old - it's possible for anyone who

opened the door to accidently 'break' the ancient part.......

but now you need it fixed

if your leading down the path of getting the headliner

shop to replace it for free - forgetit - pass it off as

dat's life with a very old car

Yes, they should have been more careful when handling

an old car - but it is also as likely that the door brake

chose the time away from you as a good time to die.

That's the way it is.

Clairfication - my question was whether the installer could have broken the door stop. Not familiar with how it works.

it stops the door from opening too far, nothing to know about how it works. Like cd says, if it broke when they were doing your headliner, its an old part that was going to break, they fall apart. And unless the front of the door is now dented from hitting the fender, it wasn't opened too far.

You'll have to remove the door panel, remove the broken pieces and install a new one.

Good luck-

two ways to fix it:

either using a $125 bmw brake as pictured above

(the metal bits fail and the roller falls down

to the bottom of the door) you'll hear it

knock once as you drive really hard left, then right

as it rolls inside the door

or:

use a Mercedes-Benz W115/W123 rear door brake

which will not fail - but as you'll read if you do a 'search'

of this site - some people shorten the M-B version strap

to limit the fully-open travel of the door

either way the door trim panel is next to take off

to estimate the damage done

rear Mercedes-Benz W123 door brake $33

front Mercedes-Benz door brake $16.12

So the answer is yes, it could have been broken someone opening the door too wide? How to fix? Don't really need the lecture as I am old enough to have my own opinions as to liability.

I don't think CD was lecturing you. I think he was just giving some insight as to the best way to maybe handle this. I bet 90% of 02's out there have busted door stops. The part was never designed to last this long apparently. I think there are a few guys on FAQ that make new door stops. I have heard to be careful on one of the sets as it makes the door pop when you open and close it due to the part not being made properly.

There is also a few guys that have used Mercedes door stops with success

I'm not as dumb as I look

CD was lecturing you. He does that to all of us but he is usually right. He suffers no fools. Not that you are a fool, he just puts it out there. Take him or leave him.

Plus he is old, crotchety, irritable and lives in the cold but he is my friend.

Also, inspect the "U" shape bracket on the A pillar to ensure it is still intact and attached firmly to the A pillar.

This bracket is what the door brake pins too.
