Years ago before Thule and Yakima existed we had Quick and Easy roof rack brackets on our cars (all cars had raingutters 20 plus years ago) allowing us to carry canoes, kayaks etc. These not lockable brackets along with locally sourced cross bars (often 2 by 4rs) and 4 bolts made for a very strong roof rack setup. If you need a budget, non lockable rack, are not afraid of a little work, these might be for you. After one bolts on some cross bars these brackets can take quite a bit of weight. Worried about theft? Remove them when not in use and store them in your trunk or basement. I had them on many different cars back in the day and never had a loss.
