Early 1600 VIN trivia answer, for fans of the earliest model

They use many of them quite often.

Do the earlier 1600 badges (not the '66, but the '67-era - like on the museum's car) have any great value? I have a reasonably nice one I bought on eBay for a few bucks when I first got my old 12/70-build Malaga car. But as soon as I walked it out to the car to replace the beat up old badge, I discovered it wasn't a match.

do they start these cars up and run them, or are they forever destined to rot seize up in their protective cocoon?

As far as I have seen the BMW Museum cars are actually used on a semi regular basis. Classic car shows, events, magazine test drives etc...

Mike, I had not heard of these earliest cars but would LOVE to hear more. I may even contact Robert in't Hout to see if he knows anything of these early 150xxxx 16oo's.

They are hard to find, but not as impossible as that 66 dash badge! I paid about $75 for my NOS (new condition) 67 Roundel badge a couple years ago. If its like new I'd say $75-100 is about right. You should hold onto it for when you pick up your next 67 car :)

It's not for sale! :)

I love the power of my 1600's Metric Mechanic 2.2, but my real heart lies in having a very nice early car. I have a company vehicle, so I won't ever really use mine as a daily driver... so a really pretty one would be perfect for me.

Man, I don't know how you could DD an 02 in Dallas! Way too hot and humid in the spring/summer and too wet/hail/cold in winter. My brother lives in Lewisville and works in downtown Dallas, but he could care less about 02's. He's a typical Texas redneck, into Camaro's and such LOL.

A bunch of the locals here do DD theirs... I think I might be the only one with a/c in mine, too! Nick (he posts here often) drives several hundred miles a day in his... red on black vinyl

It's not nearly as humid here as the southeast or midwest (I've lived in both places), so that helps. Winter is a piece of cake - we basically don't get rain between November and March and it's usually 50-70 degrees outside.

It's not a California climate, but our weather is the most conducive to driving an old car of any place I've personally lived. If only our roads were a little more fun!

Merry Christmas everyone! I wanted to share some recent news about the "1966" 1600-2 in the BMW Museum [Munich] main lobby. After seeing it last year, I suspected it was not at 1966 but a 1967 car, but could not find anyone to open the hood to check the VIN. I just contacted Andreas Hartz at BMW MT and although he would not reveal the exact VIN, he said it was a later VIN than mine (1517644) and is in fact a 1967 car, not a 66 as it claims on the display. He also does not know of BMW owning any other 1600's with earlier VINs, such as a true 66 (150xxxx). SO the earliest known VIN remains at the baby-blue Canadian '66 of 1503010. What happened to the first 3000 cars? And you would think BMW would have kept at least one of the test mules from 66, or the first car off the line? But alas, no. I attached some pics of the museum car for those that have not seen it. Same color combo as mine, but with [incorrect for 67] Tobacco vinyl instead of Dark Brown.

1502365 (Chamonix) was on Ebay Germany in 2005. It was a rolling shell.

The "Baby Blue" Canadian car is VIN 1503025.

Thanks for the clarification Les. And cool that you caught that 1502365 on German Ebay. At least we know it exists. But as a shell, its obviously not a survivor. But maybe the person who bought it will bring it back to original? Let's hope.

Oh, you're the one with the 2 66's! I saw your VIN's listed on a thread on the UK 2002 forum. Is that old one all rusted out or is it rebuildable? Is the color Caribe Blau? That's the 2nd oldest VIN known to the forums.
