25 years old from date of manufacture is the magic number, othewise you have to spend big bucks to convert this E30 to DOT standards, i.e. side marker lights, speedo in MPH, reinforced bumpers, doors, etc... Anything over 25 years old is DOT exempt. Depending on where you live, smog rules are another story. If you live in CA, don't think of bringing in a gray market car (even from another state) unless you have real deep pockets to upgrade the smog equipment on the car to CA specs. AMHIK!

Im taking Gordon's advice on this area. I would not want to deal with the dmv on this issue. I hate that place. I also hated smog on the 82 323i a had.

man that thing is sick but DMV is such a mess best of luck. if you still have the car in like 20years i would be f=more then happy to buy off you lol
