Inka - 022

The M20 Turbo Project

Finally got the right shade of orange...seems as if the previous painter was off by a weentsy bit.

Brought in my factory-issue (BMW part numbered) Kyosho 1/18th scale tii in the appropriate color for comparison.

Tomorrow, the front spoiler will be fitted, so the front apron got spotted-in.

is that a water-based paint? if so, how's it compare to the solvent-based paints wrt preparation, coverage, etc?

Gosh jerry, why don't you ask me to explain something easy...like...say...Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Don't have a lot of experience with newer water-based two-stage paints. I've not physically worked on painting an entire car since I did a black lacquer Saab 99 turbo back in the 1990s.

i was thinking more in general terms, delia...

anyhow, it's my understanding that solvent-based paints are verboten in the bay area now.

Delia;

Is that a Kamai spoiler? Looks like mine, which is an original Kamai.

If I'm not mistaken that is a picture of the fiberglass reproduction of the original urethane Kamai spoilers. I guess I was just wondering if, with all your contacts, you'd found an original urethane one or not. Mine's been on my car for over 25 yrs.

Napes, I'm 99% sure the one on the green car pictured is an original. The guy who makes the repros took the liberty of using Randy (Senna27's) car as his advertisement. There was a thread about this a couple of years ago.

However, my understanding is the repros are better reinforced where they attach.

Pierre on this board makes one helluva fine fiberglass repo kamei.

And this is one of Pierre's fiberglass copies. Note the quality of the hand-laid backside.

Spoiler fitted. Looks good.

D

Edit: When I found out from Gabriel they were ready to install the front spoiler on this project, I absolutely insisted that I be there @ UACC to ensure it was located properly on the front apron. I've seen a few spoilers with a droopy center and it bugs me to no end.

It took about a half hour to get this one in its proper position...time well spent, IMO.

Hey Delia,

What's that small spoiler I see under the front valance panel in PC240040.JPG and PC240035.JPG. I think I've seen something similar on period Apina racers. I like the bumperless look w/ the small spoiler but I've yet to figure out where to acquire one.
