Who here owns a first year 02: 66/67 1600-2 or 68 2002?

That's what I thought but it doesn't haven't any black slats in the grill...

If the Ad is from '67, then it's a 1600-2, but I think the top speed was a little optimistic.

I think it should be June 7th, 1968 as the build date it 7.6.1968 and the delivery date is 28.6.1968. I just corrected the registry entry. Sorry about that.

So this is your VIN 1661550, manufactured July 6, 1968?

Keep up the good work!

Regards,

Steve

+1

In those early years, the 1600-2 was shown in BMW’s brochures as having a 100-mph top speed and the 2002 was shown as having a 106-mph top speed. These numbers were considered slightly conservative: the guys at Car and Driver (previously Sports Cars Illustrated), and probably other automotive magazines, always seemed to milk a bit more speed out of their test cars. I’ll bet there’s a road test out there, just before April 1967, where a 1600-2 achieved 105 mph (on the down-wind side of a two-way speed check!).

It’s not a 2002 in April 1967, and the price of $2,477, P.O.E. New York, is just right for a 1600-2 at that time: my earliest window sticker — VIN 1527753, manufactured June 6, 1967 —  shows a base P.O.E. price of $2,553, P.O.E. San Francisco.

Steve

....So maybe '66 and some '67s up until... when?... had black on the front embossed nose trims?

I demand answers!

Good luck, Michael! ?

Air-brushing? Test mule? Shadows? Reflections?

I’m assuming you’ve committed Anders’ ‘66 Bible to memory? “In the beginning, there was the 1600-2...” Always a good starting point!

Just to emphasize what you’re up against, the early 2002’s used black paint, over seven slats of each front side grille, to provide the “2002 look”. This paint failed miserably: it seemed like not only stones stripped the paint, but I’d swear that bugs stripped the paint. My very early ‘70 (VIN 1668093, September 8, 1969) — probably close to the end of this paint-the-slats practice — had 20K+ miles on it when I purchased it in 1973, but the grilles really needed re-painting. If anything, that front trim on the hood is even more exposed: every car wash probably removed some black paint.

Nonetheless, I encourage you to pursue the black-paint-on-1600-hood-trim theory.

We’ll be here, eagerly awaiting your report! ?

Best regards,

Steve

There are previous “first year” threads and the early 2002 below generally comes up. I don’t know who owns it. It appears to be VIN 1660013, manufactured January 15, 1968, Granada red. With factory sunroof!

I have the original ad and the opposite page is dated April, 1967. But maybe they used a '66 and/or European car for the photo? So maybe '66 and some '67s up until... when?... had black on the front embossed nose trims?

Very nice!

OK: ten-slat center grille!  March 1966 through August 1967? September 1967? October 1967?

VIN? Manufacturing date?

Steve

My 1602  VIN plate 1561901 stamped 1968 with matching VIN on engine and the body has a  sunroof. The car had front end damage years ago  and the nose panel was replaced however all the chrome trim, grilles and bumper are missing. Original color looks  to Granada Red.

No need to guess, although I anticipate VIN 1561901 will be a December 1967 car (1968 model)! Email the VIN to BMW Group Archives and request their data for the car (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com). No charge. Post your response here and enter the car in this forum’s registry.

Thanks and regards,

Steve
