Who here owns a first year 02: 66/67 1600-2 or 68 2002?

There's nothing magic about using LED lighting, at least at this level of technology.  As you are wondering, the issue is probably with the flasher.  Older flashers work on a simple scheme- Current going to the turn signals flows through the flasher, which has some resistance, therefore heat is generated.  The flasher has a bimetallic strip, which snaps in a different position when heated, opening the circuit, turning off the power to the lights.  Then it cools down and snaps back to the original closed position, starting the cycle over.  Too little current? not enough heat to trigger the action, lights stay on instead of flashing.  Almost too little current?  slow motion version of your turn signals as it takes longer for the heating to happen.

How much is too little?  No doubt "it depends", on the flasher, wiring, grounding, light bulbs, etc.  According to the above website,

  • The LED array uses about 80% to 85% less current then the standard tail light bulb.
  • The LED circuit boards plug directly into the existing wiring harness including the ground wire.
  • These units do not require any modifications to the car other than removing the existing wires from the tail light housing and installing the new units.

The third item isn't quite correct if 15-20% of the original current isn't enough to trigger the flasher at a normal rate.  It also matters if you've change out the front turn signal bulbs to LED types, reducing the current even more.

The fix is easy though- a modern electronic turn signal flasher unit, which cares not how much current the lights use (within it's spec range of course).  The trick is to get one with the same pinout as the original flasher unless you're rewiring the entire car in which case you can use whatever pinout your find first.  Electronic flashers don't go "click" like the old types unless you spend more and get one with a built in clicker gizmo.  Some of them also have a control to adjust the timing of the flashing.

Which to buy?  Others will have to chime in.  I rewired the entire car and got mine online, wiring the connector to match it so I don't know what's normal, sorry

Well, just a quick post that a very early 1600 arrived yesterday. Number 1529682, a 1967 1600 arrived and is a proud addition to the garage. This car was one of Danny Quigley’s 02s, and is a very handsome early 6v car. It will remain in its original configuration but I will need some assistance with parts etc especially with the 6v components. And tuning the Solex + plugs.

The car arrived 11/22/22, an interesting number / date, under clear skies and warm-ish weather, no rain, snow or salt!  Here’s to many enjoyable adventures!

ras02tii: Go to the wonderful Registry on this site. There are a number of 150 cars, like 1505146  Certainly could be an older car not included in the Registry. Mahalo! Robert

On the UK forum someone just posted pictures of 1500035, which is in Finland, in quite deplorable condition.

 he's doing a beautiful job with his 66 -

What's astonishing are all the pics of gleaming and probable NOS parts. Where on Earth did he find them all?  Left me speechless!

Imagine putting a car with that level of documentation (of the parts at least) up on bring a trailer. It'd be interesting just to see what someone invariably would find to pick fault with.

Well… depends on how perfectly period correct one wants to get. I could start with the left side motor mount; should be a round one with the cup, rather than the much later block and hook version. 😉

Truth be told, that’s about all I can pick on with that restoration.

And… he chose to place the outside rearview mirror not at the leading edge of the driver’s door (March 1966 to approx. November 1967) but in the later, more rearward position (approximately November 1967 and onward). This is not an easy fix because you’d need to re-paint the door. My guess is that the door currently on the car started life on a later ‘02, and no one noticed the change of mirror location.

And was the bezel surrounding the instruments black (on the very earliest 1600-2’s) before that bezel  became silver? Certainly every factory brochure from March 1966 onward showed the silver bezel. The first photo below appeared in the March and July 1966 brochures. The second photo below appeared in the September 1966 brochure.

And I thought that 1966 models (VIN’s 150xxxx and 151xxxx) had blacked out, not body-color, rocker panels before the stainless moulding appeared ca. 1967. See the third photo.

Lastly, weren’t the embossed areas of the rear panel taillight-to-tailllight moulding picked out in black, as shown on the fourth brochure photo below?

Yes, it’s hard to ever get a restoration perfect. I’m certain I couldn’t!

Regards,

Steve

I have this vision of a NAPA store in Istanbul or Ankara, with an aisle marked, "Rare and NLA BMW parts". You take a shopping cart down the aisle and fill it to the brim. At the check-out they say, "Compliments of the house!" And you leave the parking lot in your pristine 1600...

As far as I recall, the rocker panel trim was an option then. Cars that had it had body color rockers, and those that didn’t had black ones.
