I recall seeing a post that said you can get a 1.5mm allen wrench to undo the set screw on the underside of the cylinder and it will slide out. replace it with your good one and you should be good.

ehh, mine didnt have an allen key. it has a drift pin. carfeful selection of a drill bit and it cant be bored out and a screw put in its place. and your gona need somthing to block the wheel lock. if you have to move it around before you get the other one in. and watch out for the little plate behind the cylinder. PIA if it comes out.

Remove the panels under the steering column/ignition switch.

Look up under the swicth assembly and you should find a little white sticker with a number written on. It will start with a W then 4 numbers.

This is the key number. There are a few places (BMW Dealership being one) where you can order a new key with that number.

This is assuming, however, that it's the original ignition switch!!

The key code can also be found stamped into the door hardware, so it the sticker is gone pull a door handle. The door key should be the same as the ignition if not tampered with over the years. This company made keys from my key codes not too long ago. They were easy to deal with and it did not cost me an arm and a leg.

with a key for you, it's a lot easier to remove a door lock than an ignition switch; take the door handle off and to a locksmith. He can make you a new key pretty quickly. Suggest you have a couple of spares made, so this won't happen again...

i've been reading, and is it better to replace the whole unit, or just knock out the drift pin, and switch out the little ignition cylinder. Then once done, how would i disable the steering wheel lock.

This is starting to get more complicated then what i hoped for.

I'll assume, as you have no key, the steering wheel lock is on/locked.

If you fit a new ignition cyl, you can then turn the key in that, and free the wheel lock.
