opinions on this vehicle? 74 2002 tii

Hi all!

I'm new to the forum, though I've been reading up obsessively recently. I just sold my classic truck (53 chevy 5 window) that I had a love/hate (mostly love) relationship with, and am casting my eye about for something new. I was driving by a auto shop and saw this amazingly cool looking vehicle, and it turns out to be a white (is that chamonix?) 1974 2002 tii model.

I am starting to become enamored with this car, so I wanted to run it by you eagle eyes and see what you have to say. Another mechanic buddy warned me that I "might not know what I was getting into" with this car, and sorta kinda implied it was easy to fool someone into buying a crappy money pit with these models. Keep in mind that I'm not that astute mechanically -- I can change plugs and oil and basics but nothing very complicated. I'd rather avoid something like my truck, which was gorgeous and amazing and cost me an arm and a leg -- AND was terrifying to drive (slow brakes, gearbox hung up constantly, fiddly column shifter etc).

This vehicle is being offered at $7995.

I asked about it and this is what the shop owner has to say:

"The car belongs to one of my customers. They have asked me to sell it. It is a 1974 tii. The body has been restored and is in perfect condition.

There is no rust. There are no oil leaks. Everything on the car is working. Do not know of any problems with the car. I would be happy to show it to you. "

So, what's the verdict? Attaching photos.

Car looks to be lowered. Wheels are not stock, steering wheel is not stock, Recaros were an option, but may be added. Chrome stripping and lower molding removed, meaning that the holes were patched – potential future rust source if not done correctly. Air Dam added, Front bumper removed, rear bumper replaced with blacked-out early or euro, possibly fiberglass, early/euro replacement front turn signals,. I thought that the Tii came standard with P-side door mirror, if so, this one is gone - possible door replacement.

Looks clean enough. $7995 seems a little low for a Tii of this caliber, maybe some issues or seller motivated for quick sale.

In any event, don’t even think about it without a PPI from a knowledgeable BMW independent mechanic (your friends may be good mechanics, but not model specific enough to really know what to look for, or what they’re seeing) – it’ll cost a few hundred, but potentially cheap at twice the price, especially if it saves you from an $8k mistake.

Good Luck!

Cheers!

HIDDEN RUST RADAR IS O N !

removed side body mouldings is a no no - signature

style of the car is ruined, and may suggest the body holes

were really rotten so filling and covering up, removing lousy

trim was a easier route for 'quick resale' repair

car originally had big impact bumpers

so black painted rear bumper suggests

a poor condition chrome bumper - also for

turn around with poor bumper

lack of front bumper - and to some-

poor taste spoiler also marks the car down

not great looking like this

so that's just the first blush - negative -

on to any engine, trunk, under car photos............

being at a body shop they should be able

to put the car on a lift if the floor doesn't fold up!?

so you can see what you really need to see now - not after you

you hand over cash and it's too late

a quik response....sorry if its been stated earlier....Im rushing.

frt fender to door seams seem a bit off?...

non stock wheels

frt spoiler add on..

no frt bumper

belt trim AND lower moulding removed.....this may not mean anything negative...just done for looks perhaps...but check the hole fills

seats are from BMW e21 ( recaro brand) most likely...nice upgrade.

Steering wheel is a bit desired..and a bit rare....looks to be made by Petri.

Sell it to me if u dont like it.

8k is a fairly strong price for an 02....but this is a Tii ( fuel injctd)..and they command more....this should be a solid car w/ no MAJOR issues....I would hope you can get it to top shape for another 1500 to 2k ....

get it on a lift....get a bmw person that knows 02s to help you out.....

Others have listed what is incorrect, missing and possible reasons to be cautious.

If you are interested in the car have it checked out thoroughly by a knowledgeable independent mechanic who knows 02s. the cost of an inspection could save you from buying a shiny turd. This is a good source to find someone in your area http://www.bimrs.org/

Hey I know this car well. I passed by it every day for a year on my way to work. It is at a body shop. Car looks real CLEAN. When I asked a year ago they wanted 11k for it. I am not sure if it is a real Tii. Need to check the vin but man from what I saw the car is worth the money.

I'm not as dumb as I look

Fresh paint job is a huge red flag, look carefully under the car and in trunk and underhood.

What's the mileage? Is it real mileage?

Be careful.

R front fender has been replaced, maybe L also. You can see the seam that was not filled in at the front upper edge. Yup, just zoomed in, both front fenders were replaced, possibly rust in the A pillar that's been covered up.

Beat to fit, paint to match.

I'm new as well and just bought same car: 74 tii....for $6500...resided in CA it's whole life. I'm not saying I didn't get a good deal, and I knew almost nothing about 02s going into it. But I used my knowledge from other car interests to make a smart choice. It boils down to rust/body damage. Mechanics are a relatively easy fix. If the car is rusty, or has suffered a wreck, those kind of repairs are going to cost more than the car. Fresh repaint is a big red flag. While I'd be happy to find out that my car is worth almost $8k, I don't feel that the car you're looking at is worth that much. When I thought about getting mine I looked around for about 2 weeks and found others within 100 mile of me for $5k to $7k. With all that said the tii is a BLAST!!!!!! I absolutely love this car, and my wife and I fight over who gets to drive it. If not this one get another!

^^^ Its because you should have washed it before you sold it... And why do we want to see your old car in ths post? And in case you didnt notice, your ald car is not stock.

No seriously, I am a "keep it stock" fan, and on my '71 theres not 1 thing thats not stock. But diffent guys have differnt taste. But why are you hating? He didnt ask if the car looks nice to you, he asked if its a good deal.

Sorry for the OT rant.

Now, back on track.

I dont think the mods were made to cover up a bad chassis, it looks like a style to me, white car, black bumpers, trim delete, clear lenses. Anyway, go check it out, If the cars paint is a couple of months old, the paint would bubble over rust.

If its what they claim it to be, i think its a good deal.

**Edit** pm me if you find my comment to be offensive, I'll be happy to explain my standings on the OT post. Sorry if I give the forum a bad name, it was not my intent.
