Taking a look at this tomorrow, but does this sound like a decent price? Seems a tad high to me, but it looks like it is in fantastic condition. I don't know much about it, only talked to the wife of the owner on the phone. It's not a tii. Was/is used as a daily driver and no mechanical problems. The only negative is that it needs a paint job. Not sure of any upgrades or anything. I'm kind of in love with it already, though. Only been looking at old BMWs for a month or so.

it will probably run you about 2500 to paint, so add that to the asking price, then ask yourself if it is too much for you.

by the way price is too high with that little info they have presented, no motor information or maintenance information.

go check it out but ask alot of questions and take nice cruise with radio off and windows down.

and read in the faq for things to check

Looks like a decent project. If you are serious have it checked out by a knowledgeable mechanic, sure you already know that.

Color is called California Suede, if you prefer you could call it Frozen Black, like the 30 Frozen Gray (flat gray) M3s.

Obviously it needs to be crawled under and rust needs to be looked for. The shot of the underside of the trunk lid shows that it was originally Malaga (maroon). It also looks like you can see some of the Malaga paint peeking out at the bottom of the rocker.

Even if the mileage is accurate, is completely rust-free, and needs absolutely nothing, $5500 is a lot for a non-tii without a/c in obvious need of a paint job.

But the odd paint, combined with the black interior, the bling-ey wheels, the early-style chrome grilles, and the air dam, do give the car a certain presence; it's just a question of whether that is the presence you want.

I agree - used to be Malaga, now flat "rat rod" black.

You should go look. If it is rust and smoke free - might be OK to start.

Look for rust around the rockers, pedal cluster, trunk, all along the underbelly.

I didn't see any rear shots, but is it really a 73? Round tail lights?

Like John said - 73's had a two piece dash. 74 and later had the 1 piece.

tobacco/caramel brown interior, not black. So chances are the interior has been replaced. Check very carefully to make sure it wasn't in a flood or had some other damage that would have caused the entire interior to have been replaced--upholstery, door panels, dash and steering wheel (chewed up by a bear?).

Also check for rust carefully...

Thanks for all the great feedback and help.

Checked it out today. There were just a few things off with it that is making me lean towards "no." Namely, the thought of getting a paint job, and the price. If it was painted, I probably would've bought it. I'll probably change my mind a million times this week.

I couldn't find any major rust problems, although it was dripping a little bit of oil. The engine sounded great, started right up. No weird noises (besides me grinding a gear, whoops). It did have the round taillights, and the tailpipe in the center; is that right for that year? I just had an overall feeling that something else was up, and I didn't quite come prepared to fully look over the car. I did bring a print out of one of the articles in the FAQs, which helped.

First time driving a 2002, and I am absolutely in love. Definitely decided I want one.

this car is priced correct, invest, a few thousand, in paint, and a few touch ups, and you'll have a nice piece,,,,,and remember, they don't build 02's anymore, there is nothing like owning and driving one of these

Yeah, after sleeping on it, I actually really want that car now. I just really need a mechanic to look at it for me. Anyone in the Boise area want to help out? I'll pay you :)

Look here for someone to do a pre purchase inspection:

Deep breath. Calm down.

you really need to take it to someone that knows what to look at.

Did you look under the spare tire? Did you poke at it (hard!) and look for rust?

Did you look at the bottom of the doors where the drains are and poke around for rust?

Did you drive it at high rpm and let off fast - looking for blue smoke (an indicator of worn valve guide seals)?

Did you poke at the shock towers in the trunk, or see any bubbles - looking for rust?

Does the master cylinder look really rusty and "wet"? Is there a bunch of rust under it?

Do you know any history on this car? Do you see any service records? Do you know when any of the fluids have been changed and with what?

Research. Don't let your heart buy a car. I did that once, and it cost me $12,000 in repairs!

and my wife is still mad......

Good Luck.
