Should have a round mark with the last 2 digits of the year stamped in it. Not sure where it is though just know what it looks like....

There are a series of part numbers cast into the rear section, but I think they are just that (part numbers of the rear casing, etc).

The serial number is stamped in the flat section opposite the starter mount.

The casting date is located on the inside of the bellhousing.

Looking into the bellhousing area, rub off the grime, squint and look at the upper right hand area for the casting mark near where the starter mounts. My pics of a Getrag 245 aren't so good.

in jgerock's post is the reference you need - you're looking for a 3 piece unit like the one in the picture. Front and rear sections look very similar to a stock '02 4 speed - the key is the 3rd case section sandwiched between he main case housing and tail section.

Answer-

you count the case parts.

The codes on the case sections don't correspond to the transmission, only

the casting. So only the center section casting is unique to the 245-

the front and rear will have 240 or some- such part numbers.

The casting dates are a good clue- but then, we've all seen 1986 casting

dates on 121 heads, so they're not rock- solid.

So just look for a center section and a clutch slave loop.

If you find both, you've found a c/r 2002 trans!

And then look for a speedo tap just to be sure.
