Don't think it's a chop job...the c pillars look identical to those i've seen in the McCartney book. My guess is that it's one of the few cars that was originally brought to the us. I can grab a look at it this weekend if anyone is interested.

FWIW, it was possible back-in-the-day to take European delivery on a US-spec 02 and take it over to Baur, have them modify it, and load it on the boat for shipment to the States.

It's also possible (back-in-the-day) to buy a Baur-modified, European car shipped to the States as a "grey-market" import. These cars were subject to Federally-mandated regs and required the addition of raised-height, diving board bumpers, side-marker lamps, ignition interlocks and safety-glass windshields -- among other things. Failure to do so was subject to hefty fines and having your car confiscated.

I believe the answer (or part thereof) is hiding in the VIN. USA-spec VINs are quite different than those built for the rest of the world. Whoever drops by the sellers house needs to write it down.
