How Many 1600 Owners Have Five Speeds?

I'm curious how many early 1600 owners have put E21 five speeds in their cars.

Also, have any of you kept the longneck differential? I wonder if anyone cares to keep the longneck if they're swapping out the transmission. I'm selling a shortened driveshaft to mate the E21 transmission to a longneck and I'm wondering if swapping out the transmission tend to lead to swapping out the diff and rear subframe, too.

Incidentally, I kind of liked the somewhat ridiculous combination of an overdrive five speed and a deep, 4.11:1 diff, but I suppose it makes sense to swap to the more easily found shortneck setup and go with a more sensible 3.91 or 3.64.

Further, I'm finding it odd that I love having an early 1600, but I've replaced almost every mechanical part that sets the 1600 apart from the 2002. I guess I just love the dash and those tiny bumpers.

I have also been curious on how many 1600s still have their original engines. It seems a lot I see for sale have been changed out.

My project 1600 is also going to end up being a "1600" by badge only. Seeing the dash, well what was left of it, had to go. The seats along with the engine were long changed out and most everything else for that matter and I'm finishing off the suspension with a 75 donor.

I have a 2002 with a 1600 motor! lol Long story... Its a special one though being a 71 1.6L with the 8 bolt crank. It needs a 5 speed desperately as I wind out 4500+ rms on the freeway regulary. 3.91 LSD as well. Currently building up a 2.0L but I have enjoyed my time with the 1.6L. Its fun to drive. Iv got 2 years on the rebuild but and id like to sell it to recoup some money but it seems like 1600 motors are a tough sell... To bad cuz their a blast to drive! Maybe someone will want the crank for a stroker project?

Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well!

I, too, wonder about the 1600 engine. I'm just diving into my 69' 1600 resto and wonder if I should keep the engine or upgrade to a 2L? I like the idea of having the little 1.6 in there, but wonder if it's stupid to do a dual side draft set up and a cam on it? I guess I could always swap it to a 2L in the future, right?

I have the stock 4 speed in my 71 but I did swap the diff down to a 3.64 .. Is it slow? - well yes, but at least interstate speed is now below 4K RPM.

My main complaint on the 1600 is the mechanical clutch. Compared to my 68 2002, the clutch operates more like an on-off switch. I've adjusted it numerous times and when I find the sweet spot, the pedal won't always return on its own. Frustrating.

Both of my 02s cars are 1600s.

1. I have a Granada Red early 1969 1600 with stock mechanicals (1600cc with 4 speed Porsche synchroed gearbox and longneck 4.11 diff). I've switched to a hydrolic clutch set-up though, but if I don't convert this car to 2002 mechanicals with 5-speed, I will probably revert to the mechanical clutch. The mechanical clutch is great as long as all the linkage are not worn. 4500RPM yields about 75 mph. That's my highway cruise. The 1600cc yields less power, but it is silk smooth. 1600 pistons, though, are nearly impossible to find. They surface on e-bay every once in a while. Aftermarket pistons are easy to find, but most are forged racing types (oil guzzlers).

2. I also have a 1967 1600 in Bristol. The previous owner swapped to a 2.0 liter and installed a 320i OD 5 speed. He left the 4.11 longneck diff, but he had it rebuilt and converted it from an open diff to a limited slip. The car is equipped with the telescopic style driveshaft, but not from a 1600, but rather a 1968 2002 (1968 2002s also came equipped with a longneck diff like the 1600, but in 3.64 ratio). He used this driveshaft because it is better suited for the higher torque of the 2.0 liter. This combination works great. Lots of torque and power throughout the RPM range, great acceleration, driveability even with the single barrel Solex, Better highway cruise compared to stock 2002 since gearing is still about 8 percent taller compared to stock 2002. Great mileage and hillclimbing ability.

My 72' 1602 (RHD) came with a 2L motor, it now has a 5spd.

But the late 1602's were the same as 2002 except for engine and diff.

Brakes, clutch, sway mounts all the same as a 2002. Beaner7102

1972 - 1602 RHD VIN 1554408. Fjord (with 2L motor, 5spd & LSD - Weber 40/40 to come) - "Bluey"

Depending on what you want to get out of it I'd be happy to be the next caretaker of your 1600 motor. I'm close enough to pick it up too..

My Granada '67 became an "outlaw" in '89 when Dad built it up with a warm 2-Liter, 4.10 shortneck, hydraulic clutch pedal cluster, '83 320 240 5spd, cloth 320 Recaros, 12V conversion, OLD ST springs, red Konis, dual circuit brakes, Borrani steels, but left the way cool dash and other '67 details. He built it this way to be a reliable college car for my sister. In summer '93 when she graduated college and I was graduating high school she passed it down to me.

I LOVED the 4.10 and 5spd combo! Though I've also had a 3.90 and a 3.64 I recently went back to a 4.10.

I have not been the best caretaker to the car, especially the body. But all will be straightened out as I have taken this one off the road for a long term resto modification. It will still be a 1600-2 Outlaw.

Here's sis is in '89.
