That just might be my moms old car! She had one just like that. I believe the timing gear is plastic on them... My grandpa use to be a machinist so he machined out a metal one for it and it was good to go for a long time, fantastic car she said.

It's an automatic. Purchased in Seattle .. Who knows!? I'll tell him to lookout for a metal gear!

The Toyoglide automatic was a licensed copy of the GM Powerglide, if memory serves, so it shared the same gear-shift pattern.

YEARS AGO SOME FRIENDS OF MINE HAD A GRAY ONE , UNTIL IT CAUGHT ON FIRE .

NOTHING SERIOUS , JUST AN ENGINE FIRE THAT PUT A BIG BLACK SPOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOOD .

THEY STILL DROVE IT FOR A FEW YEARS WITH THE BIG CHARACTER SPOT .

THOSE WERE THE DAYS .

If he's not aware, there is an "Old School Reunion" up here. Sort of a Datsun 510/VW rabbit crowd, but we had some 02 rep, along with old Saabs. That would fit right in.
