Cosmic rims and tii: any fitment issues?

Just wondering about the installation of some 13" Cosmic rims onto a 72/73 tii. Will the Cosmics clear the larger calipers on the tii?

The rims in question currently have 165/80R-13 tires on them and the rim lip protrudes a little, so I believe they would look better with 185/70-13 tires if I can find some. I don't know the wheel width yet (5.5"?)

Hi Jim, good score (finally right?!)

You either have 13" by 5.5" or 6" width coming your way.

I've never fitted anything to a tii, but these widths are larger than the stock steel wheel size, so you should be OK.

There are some small differences in the lips early and late, once you get them in I'd be happy to help you with photo identification. Also on the rear hub surface below all the rust there should be a date stamp, grind away with a copper wheel and see what you find.

And lastly, I would recommend 185-70-13 tires in whatever flavor you can find. Sumitomo makes one, but I'd skip the Kumho powerstar, I don't like the look as well, but they are affordable.

For anyone still reading--I'm looking for single 13" x 5.5" width Cosmic to complete a set for restoration, if you have a partial set in the barn, please contact me. mobiletradition | gm a i l

email sent.

Oh and Jim, I might be able to verify fitment of 5.5's on a Tii for you. Probably not in time though. But, I'm inclined to think there's no problem unless you've got the vented brake upgrade, that might be an issue.

Jim,

Here's a place to get some info on Cosmics.

http://www.cosmic-wheels.com/page.php?4

As Ben said, they will be 5.5" wide at least. I have just found some 185/70-13 Falken Sincera tyres at a reasonable (?) price. Maybe not the best around but I do so little mileage hopefully they will outlast me.

Also have a spare MK1 Cosmic, but I think, Ben, you have MK2s?

Mine are as pic. I've been trying to get centre caps without success, but have found E36 plastic centres sorta kinda fit. I do have a feeling that the first bump I hit, all 4 centres will leave like a bullet from a gun!

Drop Dead Gorgeous Rim !

preserve the beauty of the rim

by balancing on a present day machine

which will locate Tape-A-Weights to the inside of the rim

that clamp-on weight is a crime

Wow those cosmics are beautiful. Are they period correct?

Um, it doesn't get much more period correct than that. :b....

I'm not exactly sure when the MK1s came out; I believe late 60s. For my taste I prefer these to the MK2s.

The weights will be put on the inside CD. They will be "resto'd" and go on the Touring as part of its refurb.

British wheels for a British (!) Touring.

Period correct to the point being "iconic."

It's actually a tough call on the wheel weights. When I had the campy's mounted, I wanted the tape on weights. Tire shop didn't want to do it. They said they could get the balance closer with the clamp on weights. So that's what I did.

Next time I get new tires, I think I'll do the tape on weights.
