After 2 days of soaking I killed the little prick emergency cable that was stuck in it's tube. Little turbo torch finished it off. Installed the emergency handle bushing kit sold here too. No more sloppy handle. Time to clean up for Vintage..

i have the same dilemma. i squirted some liquid wrench down the tubes from the cabin side. at the ass-end, the cables are all wrapped up in my futile attempt to dislodge them. i have yet to tackle them again. sounds like you burned the plastic inside???

Hey Doug -

There are about 4 or 5 of us heading down sometime on Thursday. We'll most likely take 66 West to 29 South. Maybe we can meet up if you want to jump off 81.

I think the heat was the deal breaker with the cable. I didn't burn the black casing either. I cut the cable and saved the nipple just in case. The clear cable covering did cook pretty good. I do get nervous with heat on the car when migging or heating up rusted bolts. Ask me at vintage and I'll tell you why I get nervous.
