talk me about a simple forward/reverse trany

Still, for a project, i need to source a kit or a method to do a forward/reverse gearbox for a 50cc scooter. I would like to do it with chains or sproket. I found a LOT of cheap chinese gearbox on e-bay, but i am sure there would be a way of doing it cheaper ?

i found a lathe gearbox but its a bit too big and heavy

a chinese kit is 200$

...

i want to avoid making it with straps. i want to use either chains or gears.

it looks like there is a lot of machined parts in that. i dotn see exactly how it works, but it looks much complicated than just a forward/revers thing ??

i have a dead getrag 232 that i may tear apart and take out some gears out of it...

THERE ARE A LOT OF MACHINED PARTS BUT MY FREEWAY TRANNY IS REALLY PRETTY SIMPLE .

THERE ARE TWO CHAINS WITH DIFFERENT RATIOS GIVING TWO SPEEDS .

WITH A CHAIN ON EACH SIDE OF THE REAR WHEEL , A DOG THAT

SLIDES BACK & FORTH BETWEEN THEM CAN SELECT EITHER GEAR

OR IF YOU LIKE NEITHER FOR A NEUTRAL .

WHEN ONE GEAR IS SELECTED THE OTHER ONE IS ALLOWED TO FREE-WHEEL .

FIRST GEAR TAKES THE CAR UP TO 25mph PRETTY QUICKLY .

FROM THERE , YOU CAN SELECT 2nd AND IT CAN GET UP TO 60mph .

THE CLUTCH IS A MONSTER BLM 8 INCH CENTRIFUGAL UNIT .

THE MOTOR IS A BRIGGS VANGUARD 18 HORSE V-TWIN .

I DROVE IT A FEW MILES THIS EVENING . IT IS A NICE DRIVING THIS MACHINE ONCE YOU GET USED TO IT's QUIRKS .

IT's A LOT OF FUM TO BUZZ AROUND IN IT BUT AFTER AWHILE DOES LEAVE YOU LONGING FOR A 4 SPEED AND A REAL CLUTCH .

THE REVERSE WORKS THE SAME WAY THAT THE LATHE ONE DOES WITH

THREE BEVEL GEARS AND RUNS ON ONE END OF THE JACKSHAFT .

I GOT THE IDEA FOR THE CHAIN SPEEDER TRANSMISSION FROM THE EARLY MORGAN TRIKES .

I HAVE A SECOND RED FREEWAY THAT IS FOR SALE .

IT HAS THE STANDARD CVT TRANNY .

THE FREEWAY WAS BUILT BY H-M-V ( HIGH MILEAGE VEHICLES )

IN BURNSVILLE , Mn IN THE EARLY 80's .

THEY WERE INTENDED TO BE TITLED AS MOTORCYCLES BUT SOME STATES TITLED THEM AS CARS .

THE RUNNING JOKE IS THAT 30 YEARS LATER , THEY STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IT IS .

THEY WERE OFFERED WITH A 100mph GUARANTEE AND ABOUT 700 WERE

MADE BEFORE HMV WENT UNDER IN 1982 .

THE ONE THAT I DRIVE AND THE ONE I WANT TO SELL ARE BOTH TITLED AS MOTORCYCLES .

THE LAYOUT IS SIMILAR .

TWO WHEELS IN FRONT & A SINGLE CHAIN DRIVEN WHEEL IN THE REAR .

THE MESSERSCHMITT HAS A LID THAT FLIPS OVER FOR ENTRY

WHILE THE FREEWAY HAS MORE OF A CONVENTIONAL DOOR ON THE LEFT SIDE .

THE MESSERSCHMITT SEATS TWO . ONE IN THE FRONT & ONE IN THE BACK .

PILOT & TAIL GUNNER , LIKE A FIGHTER PLANE .

THE FREEWAY IS A SINGLE SEATER .
