I should know this, but it's been a long, long, time.

Found it in the bottom of a box of "stuff" while looking for some Miller & Norburn parts.

Is this an original equipment gear shift knob? I swapped mine out so long ago I just can't remember what is original. Haven't seen one in years.

I'll appreciate some help. tia

Like you I haven't seen my original one in years, but it looks like I remember. I also remember it fitted a whole lot better than the wooden one I have now. Maybe I need to take a step back to originality.

The stick is roughly made of two parts, the upper part with the metal shell and rubber grommets inside and the lower metal part will the ball and the shift linkage.

The lower part is only secured with a Seeger ring (sirclip), that prevents that the parts separate, but only in the "up and down" direction, it can turn freely as much as the friction of the rubber lets it.

So you'd have to glue or weld the parts together to keep it from spinning

Dang, that's the problem. Oh well! It's a minor annoyance at most.

Yep, I had one on my '71 1600.

Related question: Is it possible to secure the gear knob so it doesn't spin around? Mine turns around too easily... I'd like to tighten it somehow.

My 73tii had one of these in it when I bought it. It kept loosening up (the knob on the shifter - not the entire shifter). I replaced it with a nice leather knob.

Yes, and they are the secret, perhaps along with coco mats and a period correct Blaupunkt, to having a properly running '02. My car had that one when I first owned it, and when I bought the car back, a subsequent owner had changed it to one of those tacky leather ones with a roundel on it. Those are okay on flashy later model BMWs, but not on simple, basic, unpretentious 2002s (isn't the fake wood on the dial cluster flashiness enough?!) One of the first things I did when I bought my car back was to replace the knob with an original one, and the car's performance has improved dramatically.
