Visual difference between Tii exh manifold and standard 2002

Can someone provide an easy way to ID a Tii exhaust manifold or provide a link to where comparison pictures might have been posted on the site?

To my novice eye, they seem very similar in appearance to a stock exhaust manifold.

Not intending to open a huge debate thread, are they still perceived to be as free-flowing as the headers that are available for our cars?

it seems to me there is 2 type of Tii manifold, only the early ones where fatter and may flow better. No CFM flow data found yet so to me its a fairy tale that it flows THAT MUCH better.

I found another one in my junk parts (but broken) no differences at all in terms of size, compared to a 74' egr type and a early 69' type.

Well, part number for starters.

The only way to tell is to set them side by side, and look at the

'thickness'- the tii looks pudgier.

I have several that LOOK like tii manifolds, and one that

I took off a tii engine. The one off the tii engine

is 'thicker waisted' when you look carefully. You have to look carefully.

I'm with Pat on this one- if you look at all the available manifolds,

there's very little difference in path and cross section.

The early 'air rail' one might actually have the biggest passages.

But they're all really close.

Raine---that's the manifold I sold and wished I had back!

Hope it worked OK for your car.

The major difference is the lack of smog pipes on the exit flange side and lack of straw like pipes in each inlet port. The tii didn't use this stuff, although I've heard that the 74tii manifold did have some sort of bung added. Look for one as pictured above.

Not true, actually. The air injection was not fitted to some non- tii's, and the

non- tii version is the 'skinnier' one...

To clarify on my original question, is there a "quick and dirty" way to ID a Tii exh manifold for any year, say if you are at a swap meet etc. and don't have a non-Tii manifold right beside it to note the differences.

Are there castings #s or marks unique to the Tii manifold or a shape that clearly differentiates it from a standard 2002 manifold?

Some have mentioned it is fatter, but without having the stock manifold there to compare, one could potentially overpay for a non-Tii manifold being mistakenly/or not, being marked as a Tii manifold.

I believe the '74 Tii did have the emissions fittings on the exh manifold, so air inlet tubes would not be a safe marker to disqualify a manifold as not being Tii.

its funny that i have two manifold with the same cast numbers, from non-tii cars, with the bungs drilled out for egr.

there is much to argue here.

11621265449 taken from a 72Tii euro seems to fit all theses cars in realoem...

I once had a long conversation with that injection pump rebuilder-man in Chicago. @ Precision-something. He insisted that the differences in the early vs. late Tii manifold were due to the natural de-tuning of a Tii with age. He stated that the increasing exhaust temps of said Tii motors were burning the early style manifolds thin, to the point of cracking. Hence the redo, and the thicker underbelly and additional webbing. According to him, the flow is identical between the two.

Interesting and knowledgable fella.

As well, I have seen the early style on a Ti, 3-Tii's and my car from the PO, and yet the part number (as listed above by Jim) has always rendered me nothing when I search it..

very interesting. I have two that are burned inside, severe heat there.

Still interesting to see that the late ones with the injections tubes removed flows better.

I have seen that part number Jim posted on a Ti, 3 early Tiis and then my own car. the difference being that my car had a drilled bung on the back for smog??

Seems with your myth busting, Pat, the legendary flow of the Tii manifold is just that, legend. And now, maybe the only real advantage to the Tii manifold is aesthetics?

The number that is cast into the header could just be the casting number. After it was cast, it was probably made into other parts by machining air bungs and such.

That's where I landed after trying to figure it out. Figured it wasn't the actual BMW part number.
