Questions about 1600 and 2002 differences..

Wondering how interchangeable the parts are for 1600s and 2002s. Seems that 1600s are harder to find than 2002s so I'm hoping that doesn't mean parts will be that much harder to find. I'm also wondering what the difference is between a 1600 and a 1600-2. There's a 1600 on c/l that I'm hoping to look at today & just wanted a little info before I cruise to Denver. Thanks in advance.

Mechanically there are a few differences although many parts are interchangeable. The intake is smaller, the carb is a little different, rear brake drums are smaller (200 mm), rear halfshafts are different. The front seat hinges and a clock instead of a tach in the gauge cluster.

Oh and a mechanical clutch too.

It was a 1600 engine, but needed too much work. Body had some rust, interior was missing half the dash, the back seat was gone, the front seats needed re-upholstered, carpet was missing, headliner was gone, sunroof didn't seal, front window seals were cracked and dried... Plus the engine timing was off & needed to be heel-toed to idle. All in all a huge project and definitely not $1100 to me. I wanted to like it but yeah... Didn't.

..... and when they were new :

other early 1600 things not same as 2002='mechanical' clutch, 'long' rear diff, double u-joint d-shaft,

u-joint/CV axle shafts - smaller rear drum brakes,

2-piston front calipers, 'weaker' Porsche Type syncronizers

in the 4-speed gearbox, no anti-sway bars

As long as we are making this a complete list... 1600s also had all-silver grilles and no lower side moldings in the U.S.

1600-2 is the same thing but is usually used to differentiate the cars from 1600 sedans. 1602 was badging BMW began to use in Europe (along with 1502 and 1802) after 1600s were dropped from the U.S. market (mid-1971 calendar year).
