2002 Ti Repro

Thanks for the wealth of info there. I am not trying to clone a T1 and foist mine off as one, but was just thinking about the under hood aesthetics and increased output the dual carb setup offers. I really want to run a strut bar on my car as well, and the Ti intake appears to make that possible while keeping a period BMW look. Anyone have an air intake available from a 2000CS, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

The Neue Klasse Ti intakes are slightly different, they have a post on the rear one for a throttle linkage pivot... The 1800Ti and 1600Ti ones also are of smaller diameter... The 2002Ti intakes say 121 on them.

2002Ti engine differences compared to a same year "normal" '02

- 121 Ti head with larger intake and exhaust valves (same size as 2002Tii 121 and all E12 heads)

- 9.3:1 compression "bath tub" pistons (121 headed "euro" Tii's had 10:1)

- The already mentioned dual Solex carbs....

- Bosch 0 231 129 037 mechanical advance distributor, NOT the same advance curve as "normal" Tii 008, 009 or 002 distributor. These 037 distributors were also used in the earliest Tii's.

- Coolant pipe that goes under intake (from heater outlet to water pump), can use one from 320i...

- '02 Ti specific throttle linkage

-....... those are the big ones, there's many detail differences....

Cheers and HTH,

  • 2 weeks later...

Say someone wants to build a ti clone with proper Solex PHH carbs, air cleaner and using a tii engine (121 head with bath-tub pistons) as a starting point. That person might use a Bavaria fuel pump and Bosch "002" mechanical advance distributor along with a reproduction ti carb. linkage. That same person might use some tii steel wheels and (if lucky) can find an early tii body with incorrect or bad drivetrain.

Does anyone know the actual color choices the ti's came in? Is the color chart in Mike Macartney's Restoration book a good guideline?

Colors I know of were...

Colorado, the first year or so that Colorado was available it was ONLY available on Ti's.

As far as I've heard, all regular period (pre Mod71) colors were available on Ti's. I could be wrong though.

No need for a Tii shell, (just Tii/Ti struts and trailing arms) as long as the snorkel has been removed from the nose. Better to have a pre Mod71 shell with snorkel removed... Must have short bumpers. Recommend a 6-fuse shell.

Good luck, can't wait to see something like that finished.

Tom - am I crazy to try to do this? Some folks would ridicule the 12-fuses, the long console and non-silver dollar gauge cluster if using a later model Roundie.

I've researched some older FAQ threads on this.

Sign me a tii fan who lusts after a ti.

Go for it! But always remember, it is always going to be a repro, so go with a good early chassis but not a tii. They are getting to scarce to just gut and change.

My opinoin.
