Smog!!!

I have some '75-76 02 smog equipment and loads of knowledge of how to set it up... Call us at Casey MotorSports if you feel like traveling to Petaluma to have the car sorted.

Here's a few "'76 smog" threads I've posted on B4.

There IS a way to sneak around having to have an EGR system in your '76.... Set it up as a '49 state/Federal '76 that only has air injection and a vacuum advance distributor. No reactor or EGR system! You'll need either a '49 state 2002 or 320i exhaust manifold to make it work. The 320i one will need the EGR port plugged off....

The hardest part of the Air Injection system to find is the Diverter valve, they are no longer available new. These also came on '77-79 320i's and early 530i's (75-76).... The later '77-78 530i ones can be made to work by capping off two of the extra vacuum hose ports. I find used ones in Pick and Pulls. To test, you have to suck on the vacuum port and hold it with your tongue to see if it holds vacuum. There are other similar diverter valves on period porsches and Mercedes that are still available new, but I haven't found an exact match that works the same as the BMW ones... yet.

Here is a PNP Inventory list of 320i's and 530i's... centering on your Fresno zip...

If you must reinstall an EGR system in your car.... The EGR flex pipe from the Reactor to the manifold for '75-76 reactor equipped 2002's is still available new (lists for roughly $62) under part #11 71 1 260 086. My EGR flex pipe diagrams are pictured in this Photobucket album....

The EGR filter you are looking for is NLA from BMW new. Neither of the EGR valve part numbers are available new.... There are "rebuilt" EGR valves sold by some auto parts stores though.... Good working used ones are increasingly hard to find.

Cheers, HTH and if you have any more questions I'll be here....

Wow Tom thanks a mill!!! In the engine comp. the sticker says 49state on it and it did not come with a thermal reactor. The manifold cover has "R121" stamped on it . I really don't know just what i need(so sad). Just going by info online .I do have pics if you don't mind taking a look at my ordeal. May have to take a trip up north. Thanks again to all you guys!!!!
