Hi everybody, new here!

Hi everybody! I have always loved the 2002 and wanted to own one. Recently I met a guy who just purchased a late '68 2002 from some guy in Bakersfield because it wasn't running. It's probably been in a garage for 20 years. Odometer says 56k but who knows if that is true. He was going to restore it and actually has done a few things towards getting it to run again, but then he bought a '71 911T so his priorities changed. He is considering selling me the 2002 since I told him how I am a longtime BMW owner and CCA member, but more importantly that I have always wanted to own one and will take care of the car correctly. Hopefully I can find him some P-car enthusiasts to help him with his 911 and then this '02 will be the one for me!

Car runs, not perfect but good enough for now. Restoration will definitely be needed, interior and exterior. Car was originally Alpineweiß, same as my old E32 (FTW!).

Well, here are some pics for now

he sent me this one before I saw the car. My response was :drool...

sorry, it was dark out when I took this. I need to go back during the day and take a better look at the car.

Welvome!

I have a soft spot for rustbucket '02s, and I LOVE that car :)

Like a sick puppy I just want to take it home and nurse it back to life!

You should know that a complete restoration is going to be time consuming and costly.

I say shoot it with a good primer, fix the mechanicals and have fun driving it for a while before you do major bodywork, 'cause then the car is going to be out of action for months.

Most of all, have fun.

Thank you Jacques. Yeah, I know a true restoration will take time and be costly. Luckily I have a modern BMW to drive in the mean time. I do agree that a simple paint job will be a priority just to protect the sheetmetal.

Also, despite what it may cost to restore this I believe it will be significantly cheaper than my other possible project (Buy an E46 M3, then swap the motor with one from an E39 M5!!!)

Wow JP, that sounds like a fun project!! Like an E46 m3 doen't have enough poke already!

Since you have not bought this one yet, you might want to look around and see if you cant find a cleaner example that you like. If that car has rust in the rockers/rear shock towers/floor/front clip(looks clean on the pic) it might be wise to buy a rust free car for a bit more or find one that has been fixed already.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but it would be cheaper and quicker that way.

But what do I know, see pic for my project at the moment.

Yeah, not going to be an easy job to shoehorn that V8 in there but it will be the closest I will ever get to owning a M3 GTR Straßeversion (they only built 5). I know there have been a few done, not exactly a cheap project. Here is one example from Norway:

80798d1238685547-s62-engine-pic-cimg3376.jpg

80799d1238685552-s62-engine-pic-cimg3378.jpg

As for the rust I will be going back tomorrow during the day to check the car out better. I don't think there should be much if any as it has been a southern California car and sitting in a garage in the desert for decades not running. The main reason why I want to do it is the fact it has such a low VIN (appx #4000 sold in the US). I will definitely keep my eye out for better deals but I love the idea of completely doing the car myself from that status to beautiful once again...

For example, these two were at Autocross today!

2002ti1.jpg

the white one ('71 2002ti) won the 4-cylinder Class today and he has also won the local clean car contest many times. I believe the other one placed second in the Gold (instructors) Class

If you have any other recommendations as what I should look for tomorrow I would appreciate it. The current owner is in no hurry to sell the car and he already has assured me that I have first option if he does decide it needs to go. If anything, we will probably work on it together for a while (he will continue to drive it) and I will slowly use that as a bargaining chip towards a better deal on the car.

M3 gtr's make me drool.... And if that is a real 2002ti then it is worth a lot! And super scarce!

Anyway, here are a couple of links that are good reading about 2002 purchase. It might be an information overload but scan through them and you will have a pretty good idea of what to look for. But read through the first one at least.

Blunt Tech also has great prices and good service (US) http://blunttechclassic.com/

Jacques,

Thank you very much for the info, exactly what I wanted. I'll be sure to start reading them.

Yeah, GTR's have always been my favorite E46. Don't get me wrong, a CSL is a nice car too... but it's just not the same kind of beast the GTR was. Hell, Porsche put up such a fuss that the car was banned from competition in the US. I've actually met Boris Said and he said out of all the race cars he's ever driven the M3 GTR he drove at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in 2005 is still his favorite.

As for the question of real ti or not - it is real. Belonged to a friend of his who bought it in the late '70s. She died a while ago at the age of 46 and he got it from her husband. Keeps it in that shape to remember her.

You've been a great help, I'm sure I'll have more questions later but this was perfect for a noob like me.

Regards,

JP

I don't think Alpine was around in '68. It's probably Chamonix.

Yes...it's Chamonix and very lowered. As others have mentioned, I'd make it safe and legal then drive it around and enjoy it before you go crazy. Restoring this car to "former glory" will cost substantially more than buying an original car or a previously restored car. (not to mention your personal labor)

Whet your whistle and then decide what you want to do (if you do buy it)

Please post the VIN here and more pictures!

Hahaha, thanks everybody. Yeah, no clue on the color as you can tell there isn't much of it left. I think PO did cut the springs IIRC, I plan on new suspension anyways. As for cost, I'm not too worried as I'm sure it will be a work in progress for a long time

As for the VIN plate, here you go:
