valve covers

I tried searching, blah blah...I know there are several variations for the M10 valve covers but can anyone tell me what valve covers were used on what years and on what cars (1600, 2002, tii)? Thanks

This is from a NK car, (no ribs)

From a tii, (short bib for the blow-by tube). I know the 1972s have a metal cap.

The plain valve cover (no ribs) in his first picture was also used on early 1600s and '68 2002s...

The ribs were added sometime early in 1969...my Feb 69 production 2002 has the ribs. That valve cover was used at least through the 73 models; then the squarelight cars (including 74s IIRC) used a different style of Roundel (larger) with a different placement. Someone I'm sure will post a picture.

If you find a valve cover with a cast-in flat pad on top towards the distributor end, it's from an E21 (320i) or an E30 318i; both cars used an M1- engine, and some piece of either emissions or EFI gear was fastened there.

So far as I know, all 1600s and 2002s came with metal oil caps; they start leaking when the get old, so many have been replaced with plastic ones.

This was on a 74 (Factory rebuild engine I believe)

Interesting, my engine # matches the car VIN on my '67 but I guess the valve cover is not original.

As far as I know, this is the original on my mid/late 69. My car had the smooth 3pc dash and the 4piston brake calipers.

This is what came on a factory rebuilt engine I have, it is a cast date '82, I have some others on the shelf, I'll investigate. I think the cover on my 5/68 was ribbed:

Saw the factory "NEW" Tii at Monterey a few years ago, it had a 320i valve cover on it! It was in the padock with Rug Cunningham's cars, I gave them a bad time about it. The next day they had the correct V/C.
