Ignition Help - Pertronix

I started the convert to Pertronix electronic ignition this weekend and have stumbled. I thought it would be easy - Haaa.

The car has a Korman motor and the distributor is not believed to be stock. Its part number 0-231188 - 002. Pertronix support stated that i need Ignitor #2842 and that is what i am using.

I installed it into the distributor and it lines up correctly. When i go to start the car, it would not start. The manual states that the coil must be 3ohm. I have a red coil and its 1.5 ohm. I pulled out an old black bosch from a long gone 914 that i had. It was 3 ohm. I istalled that and nothing. I tried jumpering the coil directly to the battery and that did not help either.

How do i know if i have a ballast resistor? Any ideas what to check?

I would love to get this back on the road before snow and salt hit for a few more drive. Your help will be appreciated.

Todd

Looks like you have the wrong model. I have a 76, and use the 1847V.

76's do not have the resistor/block, you have a resistor wire that runs from the driver side across the firewall. That wouldn't keep the car from running though.

from the FAQ:

Years BMW Model Pertronix #

1969-72 2002 excluding Bosch dist. # 0-231-115-045 1847V

1972-73 2002 with Bosch distributor # 0-231-180-003 1847V

1972-73 2002 with Bosch distributor # 0-231-180-008 1843

1972-73 2002tii 1847V

1974 2002 Tii, 2002 1843

1975-76 2002 1847V

1977-79 e21 320i (in case you're running one on your '02) 1847V

And here's where your resistor wire hides:

And since you have side drafts, maybe add an MSD box while you're at it! 8-)

im about to order this also....I also have a 002 dizzy and from what i saw I think i need an 1847V.

I have a new bosch blue coil also,

my question is, Do i need to worry about the little white ceramic box (resistor ) mounted about the coil....?

thanks in advance...

do a google search or a site search on the 2842 unit and you will find that the 1847v unit is the correct working model for the '72 tii replacement dizzy you have.

Hmm - my car is not a tii. Why woud someone put a tii dizzy in it? I thought they spun in the opposite direction?

because you no longer have a vacuum advance set-up, it's now mechanical. You have side-drafts, and that set-up doesn't work w/ vacuum advance. Not a big deal.

All - I got the car running with 2842 pertronix. Pertronix tech support swears that this is the correct unit based on my dizzy 231-188-002.

I may have had a wiring issue. The i needed to remove the old black wire from the coil. The timing was way out of whack and the engine sputtered. I timed it by ear and it smoothed out. I turned it a good 1/4 inch counterclockwise.

I will roadtest it this weekend.
