Last 2002s Factory production numbers

Ran across this info in one of those huge BMW books covering every mechanical conveyence they've made (I think).

Factory production numbers:

1975s 24,333

1976s 10,081

These #s do not exactly jibe with the US VIN tables which indicate 10,442 1975s came to the US and 18,876 1976 models came to the US. The #s above may well be calendar year production, not model production.

I think the production #s went down on the '76s because they were ramping up for the 320i production.

I wonder how many of these cars are still around, at least in driveable condition.

The figures in your book are correct.

They include cars manufactured in a calendar year at the factory which also includes the Euro models, not just the US cars.

calendar years (1 Jan-31 Dec) vs us model years (generally 1 Sept-31 Aug), which causes all sorts of headaches for those of us who try to track production numbers.

This is what causes people with early production, say tii's, who write to BMW Classic for their car's production date to be told, "your 1971 tii was assembled on 6 October 1971..." when we all know that US tii's weret introduced for the 1972 model year.

According to the figures in the BMW shop manual, the only 2002s that were built in calendar year 1976 were for the US market: 7896 4 speeds and 2185 automatics (10081 total. However, those figures don't include 1976 model year cars that were built between 1 Sept and 31 Dec 1975; that's probably the discrepancy.

The only other 02 cars that were built worldwide in 1976 were 21,530 1502s; all other E114 variants were discontinued at the end of 1975 prduction because the first 3 series cars were introduced in 1976--everywhere but the US.

cheers
