Tii Specific parts

Tito3

Recommended Posts

I have two 74 Tii's. I spoke to someone who is supposed to be extremely knowledgeable about the 02's. He said that If I replace the engine from one car to the other that this will impact the final value of the car should I ever decide to sell it in the future because it will no longer be a matching #'s car. Does anyone actually keep the serial #'s of the engines that went into each individual car? What about the transmissions? Other parts I should be aware of and not change out? I want to know this information since I have decided to keep the original look and components and just drive the hell out of it.

The number on the original engine block is the same number as the VIN, so it's easy to tell.

79' 320i (comfy modified daily driver)

73' 2002 (weekend beater crusier/rolling resto)

73' 2002tii (superfast rust bucket undergoing restoration)

72' tii (parts car)  ...99' SV650  ...00' KTM 380 2 stroke ...06' Kawasaki Ninja 500R ...96' F-250 7.3L turbo diesel (towtruck)

The engine blocks are numbered to match the chassis on all 2002's. Other than that there are no serial numbers on any of the other components that link them specifically to that car. There are a number of parts that changed over the years and would be noticed by someone that really knew what they were looking at if they were not correct for that specific year (ie plastic vrs aluminum intake runners, 121 vrs E12 heads etc)

yes it does matter - bad vibrations when you see a car

with non-matching MOTOR and CHASSIS numbers. One

will always wonder what else is 'wrong' with the car should

you sell it. Fine if your keeping it in the fam forever. But expect

to take a loss on your selling up the road for the non-matching

problem. The up side is it's a tii motor going into a same year tii.

Keep both MOTORs (complete!) with the surviving CHASSIS

Now you have someting of real honest value

in the future

Matching number on the engine could be of more importance as these cars become more valuable. My car doesn't have the original engine in it, but I have the original block and that is kind of nice because I can rebuild the original engine while still driving my car. When I bought the car the guy wanted to keep the original block, but I insisted. Even if you use the non original engine you should keep the original with the car and pass it on if you sell it. I have the engine from 2760341 if someone has that car I would be willing to work something out to reunite it with the car, but that car was probably crushed years ago.

off and new numbers applied. Don't think anyone has been able to decode what the new numbers mean, but they aren't in any E114/E10 chassis (VIN) number range, and some even have letters with the numbers.

These blocks are thus pretty easy to spot.

replacement 'engine' from bmw has new number with "+ 1xxxxx +" stamped

and some indy repair shops or bmwdealer techs may stamp

My former US spec 74 2002 that I bought used in Germany from a fellow airman had a replacement short block installed in 81 due to ring problems. The local BMW dealership in Kaiserslautern installed the short block and the replacement block came with the correct VIN. When I parted out that car due to a collision, I traded the engine to Jack Fahuna and he installed in a customers cars. 4224378 is out there somewhere.

So then its mainly just the block that is important to the engine. My head may be bad so I was wondering if trying to repair it would be worth it to repair with the engine or find another good condition one. I know there are spots on the body that distinguish the car(the engine apron, the seams on the front of the hood) is there anything else that I am missing?

The cylinder heads and most other parts on the cars have year and month date codes cast into them. Therefore it is best to use a head or other dated part that is slightly older by no more than about three to six months than the build month of the car.

This original engine and date coded parts used to not matter one bit on '02s, but as the values and rarity climb we are seeing cars with their original parts being worth more than those that do not. It's something that has been the norm in American car collecting for eons. In the muscle car world cars at the top of the heap have date coded hoses, belts, carb tags and replicated paint marks from the assembly line. I've even heard of owners tracking down the assembly line worker in a retirement home to have them redo the markings on the firewall of a Corvette... I say that there is a level of obsessiveness to this trend, but at a reasonable level it is understandable.
