74 Owners Manual question

Recommended Posts

I recently bought an owners manual for my 74 Tii from a fellow FAQer. It was not quite what I expected though as it has a few oddities and I want to get help on it:

* It does not depict the big bumper in the handbook or the US supplement

* It does show one pic of the square tail light, but most pics are of the roundie

* The fuse layout is the incorrect early version 12 fuse layout, not the version that is correct for 74-76 cars

* The non-Tii wiring diagram shows a square light

* But the Tii wiring diagram is the earlier one with the round light -- it is even marked 114Tii/71 (assuming that it refers to Model 71)

* Both wiring diagrams are for the Euro version and there is no US version

So, what's the deal with this -- is this how the 74 manual was? Was there no correct version?

I emailed the seller thinking I had been sent a 73 version, but now I see couple of references to the squarelights. But, bummed it does not have 2 things I was looking ot have -- the correct fuse and wiring layouts for the Tii.

I'll verify this with my 74 manual, I believe it too has a lot of roundies in it. The 76 manual has a lot of the same illustrations, a lot of a boy and his dad with the BMW keys. Not the freshest thing in my mind, though, as I haven't seen either in two years. Does yours have the boy and his father?

No, just a pic of the boy cutting out pictures of BMWs, roundel, etc with a caption "Daddy said I xxxxx"

Yeah, and daddy is gonna tan your rear for cutting up all his vintage BMW brochures.

Go by the date on the back cover. If there is one picture of a squarelight in it, then it should be a '74 or up. The rest of the owners manuals always depicted the Euro models in most of the pics.

I have one, # 01 41 9 099 781, dated 15 VIII 73. Cover says for 1602,2002,1802,2002auto,2002tii. It shows a small bumpered car with 73 overiders, but there are also pics of a square taillight and a steering wheel with the large, square center pad. There are also plastic grilles and wood trimmed dash panels on the cars. This would be for a later car 74 and up. Not sure if they made newer owner's manuals for the 75's & 76's.

I need to find one for the Mid 1971 to late 1973 models (which is what my car is). Anybody have a part # for this owner's manual?

I have another one, #01 41 9 099 891, dated 12 XII.70. Cover says for 1600,2002,2002auto,2002ti. It shows a roundie with silver dollar guages and the short console. All the wiring info shows 6 fuses. This would be for the North American cars up to mid 1971.

All the owner's manuals show the same destructive child finally being led away by his father.

It shows the same as yours- 114tii/71. The fuses on page 46 show 5a, 8a, and 16a.

I think the owners manuals may be somewhat generic. Let me see what I find in the Blue shop manual.- Blue binder says electrical is the same for model 73 on. The fuse box shows the 8a and 16a fuses as you said.

As CD posted a few days ago, there were the early cars (before mid-1971), and then the middle cars- model 71 (Mid 1971 to 1973, and then the late cars- model 73 (1974 to 1976, but some probably had actual build dates in 1973)

What part numbers do the other 1974/75/76 owners have on their owner's manuals?

Yes, I have the 11/74 US owners supplement. Page 12 -- the fuse listing has a mix of 5A, 8A, and 16A fuses, while other references on the FAQ here including pics of stickers you've posted show the 74-on cars only had 8A and 16A fuses.

Wondering why?

I have both items you show below, and just recieved a Feb 13, 1975 edition of the owners manual. Comparing them:

1. The 2 listed below are both incorrect (ie. have the earlier fuse layout and the earlier Tii wiring)

2. The Feb 1975 edition seems to have corrected at least these 2 errors -- it has the correct Fuse layout and the Tii wiring is for the square tails.

Not sure if this was the first correct edition or if there were ones in between that were correct.
