Paul, could you get away with a thin spacer? 5mm would do it I'm sure. 195 isn't that wide. Stock 165/13 is 23.4 inch diameter. And a 195/60/14 is 23.2 inch diameter. A 185/60/13 is 22.7

After many years of running 195/60 x 14s, I decided to go down to 185s on my last set (Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1) and have been very pleased with the change. A slightly smaller circumferance means a little more torque (read acceleration) thou my speedo had been calibrated for the old tire size so it's now off a little (reads about 3 mph fast up arount 80-85 mph). It also means the car sets about ¼" lower, thou you'd need a pretty good eye to discern the difference.

Well, here's the best pic I can find on my work computer of my car with 185/60/14 Bridgestone Potenzas. My car rides on H&R springs and Bilstein shocks. I previously had 195/60s on, but they required spacers on the rear and sometimes hit the fender lips going over bumps. My opinion is that tire quality matters more than width for grip, so I don't mind the 1cm sacrifice that much and all-in-all am much happier with the 185s, but of course your mileage may very.

Oh, and 185/65s are probably actually better for a daily driver, but I would guess a 65 profile would start to feel a little mushy in hard corners if you're more of the autocrossing type.

Yup! 185/60x14" is mint for track and street driving

Steering is quick, precise, nimble with excellent grip

the car is better handling, better feedback,

a better sword with the 185's

CD...Kinda off topic, but looking at that pic you posted of your '74, it looks like you kept the original big bumpers, but they're 'pushed in'. Did you do the "drill out the fluid in the asbsorbers" trick? I'm brainstorming ideas on what to do w/ the 'diving boards' on my '74....
