The Dealer in San Jose as changed hands over the years

The location on the window sticker is now the BMW Motorcycle dealer, San Jose BMW

The car dealership changed hands to Don Lucas BMW in the late 70's and then to Stevens Creek BMW in the early 90's and as moved down the street a couple of times also.

Found my original recently in a junk drawer among a bunch of old chapter newsletters and other associated junk at my parents house. I was a little hasty taking it off the car at the time and ripped it. I got a 10% discount off the sticker price at the time. I think the owner gave it to me at a discount because I had previously spent a fortune in parts for my 1965 1800NK and was beginning to wear on the parts department guy who didn't even know what my car was. Needless to say I had to sell the NK to buy this 02.

Just goes to show how quickly 2002's gained in list price. I bought my '70 for $3050 and the dealer threw in an AM radio. Four years later and the sticker is almost at $6000.

Hi all,

Bought my '67 1600-2 last December and just yesterday was going through my glove box and found a "Service - Stationen Europa" Map booklet showing BMW Service Stations all over Europe, in German.

Opened it and found these!  Probably untouched since new - who would bother looking at a Service Station Booklet for Europe???

I sent a letter to the original owner this morning in hopes to learn more about the car!

I was smiling all day yesterday!

This is great stuff, Paul! Note that a '67 model year 1600-2 is selling for full retail, even in September!

I'm curious about the dealer "add-ons" on the sales order. $50 for a monaural Blaupunkt AM/FM Frankfurt? Sounds right for '67. Pirelli radial tires: N/C? Was it delivered to the U.S. with "lesser" tires -- cheaper radials or, heaven forbid, bias-ply tires -- and the dealer, as a selling concession, is upgrading from them to the Pirelli's? Seat belts: N/C? These should have been legally required by '67 but it sounds as if they were installed by the dealer, not the factory.

Someone -- not I -- should transcribe all the car and option prices from all the window stickers on this forum and create a tidy database of '02 prices over time. Volunteers?

Steve,

Good questions about the seat belts and the tires... If I am in contact with the original owner I will ask him.  I have 5x13 OPEL wheels dated 10 67.  Maybe he upgraded right then and there to wider wheels for wider tires?

Below are what I have in the way of seatbelts.  The car was rallied by the PO (second owner).  Did these cars come with seat belts?  Are the attachment "rings" an add on?  Also, do seat belts bolt to the rear deck like mine?  Are those for rear seat belts or for the front?  Those attachments certainly look authentic as seen in the trunk photo... I have nothing under the rear seat to attach to for rear belts...

Well, 10/67 Opel rims weren't available in 9/67 but an earlier owner could have added them anytime after delivery, even a month or two after delivery. And someone rallying the car would be a natural suspect in identifying who swapped your car's BMW/Lemmerz rims for Opel/Lemmerz rims.

As to seat belts, someone with more expertise in early '02 belts will need to comment authoritatively. I thought that four pairs of seat belts were required on a U.S. '67 1600-2, and no shoulder harnesses. At least that's what I recall from my '67 1600-2. But the welded-on nut and reinforcement visible from the trunk side of the rear parcel shelf certainly look factory, unless the trunk has been repainted. I believe newer '02s have a threaded nut for back seat shoulder harness, but it is on the C pillar, not on the parcel shelf.

Someone here should know more. And, hopefully you'll be able to speak with the original owner. Prepare your list of questions!

Regards,

Steve
