Query about "track width"

When you look at the specs of a car and they state the front + rear track, does that measurement reach the outside or centre of the tires? Another thought was that it measured to the outside of the axel.... And one friend said maybe to the outside of the fenders....What is this esteemed board's opinion? TIA

More power!

The general understanding is:

Center of tire contact patch to center of tire contact patch..Track can be affected by wheel backset..

or

Track is the dimension from the centerline of the tire tread on one tire to the centerline of the tire tread on the opposite tire on the same end of the vehicle, front track or rear track.

or

It’s the measured distance from the centreline of the crown of one tyre, across the vehicle to the centreline of the other on the opposite side.

If I would guess I would say centerline as well, but get the specs from CD and go measure to make sure.

BTW, the ti and tii with its wider tires had a a wider track(according to BMW specs) than the standard 2002. Just food for thought.

Centre to centre. So track can be altered by wheel offset.

take a tape measure and go measure your car

see where these measurements match up

then you see for yerself where the TRACK

center points are

Wheelbase 2500 mm 98.4 in (8' 2 3/8")

Front track 1330 mm 52.4 in (or 1348 mm 4' 4 3/4")

Rear track 1330 mm 52.4 in (or 1348 mm 4' 4 3/4")

Length 4230 mm 166.5 in

Width 1590 mm 62.6 in

Height 1410 mm 55.5 in

TRACK will change with different rim width and offset

now go read about SCRUB RADIUS and return

for a discussion about that and what it does to

the way your car steers/handles
