John, did you use them or get something else?

Bill, I couldn't see how they would work. I got fender washers and super-thin black rubber washers to cover the old cracked rubber washers.

I pulled out the new rubber washer that was on the car. The new one is the smaller 30mm dia x 6.2mm thick.

The original metal washer is 29.2mm dia.

And I've used a thin 32mm dia Ace h/w rubber washer on top.

So a 1" fender washer as shown above works well with the smaller dia new rubber washers.

Wow, a bunch of names I don't recognize on this old thread.

Anyone have ideas on the rubber washer with fiber insert that goes between the bracket and the housing?

Time will reveal, Tom, whether my “system” holds up.  Here’s the RealOEM parts page:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=2583-USA-10-1972-114-BMW-2002tii&diagId=13_0690

The mounts originally used four “06 RUBBER WASHER   16114080148” and four “07 Washer  13720043716”.  Since the latter is NLA, I bought eight of the former and used the number 06 RUBBER WASHER on both sides of the bracket. And then I found some (too?) big fender washers to complete the “sandwich.”  I seem to recall I got these washers from BMW (well, BLUNT), but I’m not finding the part number or receipt.

The first two photos show factory images of the installed airbox with brackets.  The third through fifth photos show my ‘73’s airbox today.   The sixth and seventh photos show my ‘73’s original airbox and my spare airbox in “as found” condition.  The common point among the ‘73’s “restored” airbox, the “as found” airbox, and the spare airbox is that none have/had precisely the correct mounting hardware.

But I’m moving in the right direction — I believe I need slightly smaller fender washers to make “the appearance” correct, even if the lack of original replacement parts won’t allow me to make the individual components precisely correct.

Best regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve - the washers you have appear to be the same size as the ones I have, they just cover the new rubber ones.  I bought 4 new ones and will get another for the underside of the bracket.

what paint did you use on the housing?

Tom,

Bill Miller, of Miller’s Powder Coating (Lilburn, GA), powder coated the airbox in semi-gloss black.  I used Bill to powder coat everything during my Atlanta tenure!  Great guy, good work, good prices.

Best regards,

Steve

He probably wonders what happened to me:  I think I visited him monthly for 7 or 8 years and then never had an opportunity to say goodbye....
