I have a 74 and I spent the weekend installing new shocks, struts and springs. There are aluminum spacers that go under the strut tower and over the strut. Are these from the factory? What are they for?Can you remove them to lower the front end?Thank you for any help you can give.

as Uncle CD would say, take them out and through them over the fence into your neighbor's pool.

They were there to raise the nose to good ol US of America standards for safety

Take them out and put them on top(of the guard/strut ) as then it will take up the extra bolt length.

They were installed on '02s, E3s and E9s (USA & Euro).

Their exact purpose escapes me, but, as most of us have removed them without problems......go for it.

My friend Les, see above......

Hello Bill,

Hope you and the family are well.

I know the obvious, and perhaps correct, reason for the spacers is to set the car height at the front.

There were, apparently, two different heights available. For some reason, I have not yet been 100% convinced it was just to set the height. I wonder if Helmut, Hans, whoever, had another reason. They are quite an intricate design just for a height spacers. Enquiring minds want to know.

Edit: according to the parts book that I have, these spacers were not used on....any 1600-2/1602 model, no 1802 model, 2002ti, 2002turbo, 2002 trg auto and 2002tii trg, but were used on the rest. I wonder if this is true.

Les,

I should have know you know better, my bad.

The cars you list are Euro only cars correct?

Yes Bill. I'm curious as to why the 2002 Trg had them (mine did), but the 1600 Trg, 1802 Trg, 2002 Trg auto and 2002tii Trg didn't, according to the parts book.

They were for raising the nose of the car for DOT headlight Height regulations of the time. Or at least that is what we were told by the service rep in 1974. I used to have dozens of them laying around, funny how many of them "fell off" back in the day.
