Registering a car in CA with historic plates does allow you to avoid smogging it. But cars using historic plates are legally limited to other than daily-driver status. Theoretically, one can only drive a car with historic plates when it is participating in some kind of organized event, such as traveling to and from a car show. This essentially means that is you are driving the car on a weekday, you might want to have a good excuse ready, such as "I'm coming back from a magazine photo shoot." The question is, how many officers actually know the law, and how many will stop you if they think you are violating it?

Great example of how it is not easy to get back the $$ you invest, especially if you mod. Nice car but a shallow pool of buyers at that price.
