1600 single line caliper flex hose availability

Howdy,

My flex hoses have a male and female end (unlike 2002 hoses), the male going to the caliper here:

Are these the proper calipers?

Any p/n for the flex line or shall I source custom stainless braided ones? I'm running into dead ends.

Thanks,

Ray

Hmm, but the '02 lines seem to be female at both ends...

Cheers,

Ray

Ray, one piece of the later dual line setup will work. For ss i'd figure about $24 for the pair.

The line from your caliper is steel,(Female to female) then where the bracket is on the strut , that is where it changes to the flexible hose (usually rubber, male to male) then it attaches to the steel line on the other bracket that is on the inner guard.which is a male steel line .So most flex hoses(2002) are female /female .

......and looking at your first photo,

yer pads are shot - squeezed tight against the retaining

spring clip. Check the caliper pistons for free, easy

movement. The disks have seen better days.

Ray,

I think the orig part # for the single line was 34 32 1 116 515 (according to the parts book). Now NLA.

However, part # 34 32 1 159 882 appears now to be the single line hose to suit both the real early car with the remote type booster/servo and the later style servo.

Having said this, the diagrams appear to show a hose with two female ends for both the above part #s.

Thats right ....so since all BMW flare nuts are the same with a bubble flare,I guess we could assume that a BMW 2002 flex hose (stainless or rubber ) could be used as a replacement .

Does look like an odd fitting on your caliper.

I guess you could get the female ended hose, then a male to male adaptor to re-use that fitting.

OR, take your old hose to an Aeroquip stockist & see if they can make one (two) up.

I'm here to help you!!

The early caliper line came out horizontally from the caliper, that's not an original or OEM caliper. Never seen those Star bolts used either. The e21 replacement single line caliper exits at the top like yours, I used a steel line from the caliper to a flex line to get the proper distance and clearance.

Thanks Chris,

You're much more helpful than Les! ;-)

I don't know if those are ATE or what. BTW Brakequip suggests getting proper lines rather than using adapters -- probably they consider adapters here a potential liability/safety issue.

CD thanks, I've not had the car on the road yet. I'll look at renewing brake components.

Cheers,

Ray

Yes, sorry, I'm used to working with the Wilwood single line kits. But as far as the SS lines go, my estimate is still correct.

Huh. Why do I think I know the easy answer, but can't remember it???

The nice thing about that banjo is that it's almost universal-

you can get a line made with one like that pretty easily, or make it yourself

if you scrounge around to get the right part number.

That's how I did the Sentra brakes on the back of the race car.

A suggestion, though- pull the banjo adapter and look to see what the

threads look like. There MIGHT be a bubble flare down there...

and then you can use a piece of solid line as an 'adapter'.

All that said, this might be the perfect time to convert to a caliper with

a bigger pad- those little pads are expensive, hard to get and

don't stop you all that fantastically.

Oh- THAT'S what that bell going off inside my head meant-

get yourself an E30 front line. It goes from a female bubble in the

caliper to a male fitting on the car. Forget how long it is, but 'probably long enough'

and they're quite inexpensive.

If THAT'S not long enough, the E36 one is about a mile.

And has the same fittings.

KNEW I knew the answer to this one.

Thanks Toby,

Good mental exercise for you.

I believe I did look -- and no bubble flare on the caliper(s).

Chris has told me I can slap on a host of E21 components pretty cheaply, and I'm sure with positive effect.

Poor car. I'm jonesing to drive it now, no rear anti-sway bar and all!

How's your 2002 running?

;-)
