72 BMW 2002 Classic Fully Restored $29000 NoHo CA

LOL. It seems joke worthy. For that kind of money, I'd expect the hood to be mounted correctly, the trim to line up, the floor carpets to out of the way of the gas pedal, and at minimum an Alpina A4 setup and close ratio 5 speed. I'd also expect that the Hartge badge would be there for a reason, rather than just as a joke.

Why do some here rip our cars looking for the slightest blemishes? Instead, let’s hope he gets every penny he’s asking for. It’s a very nice car and if it sells well, the value of our cars go up with it. It is also helpful when trying to justify the value of your car to your insurance company if we get banged.

Sorry. I have to agree with williamggruff. Non original color and a few other incorrect oddities. When your restoring an 02 it does not necessarily have to be original to it's condition. But we would like to see it TASTEFULLY done with the right upgrades and parts. Lose the HARTGE badge and the exhaust and the square bottle. This one has fallen away from the mark a little bit. IMO.

Twenty-nine thousand dollars? Is this guy high? I mean it's a clean-looking car from what I can tell, but it's a lightly modified standard 2002. I don't nitpick over some details because I'm not a purist. But even if this car were perfect, I don't think it would be worth 29 large.

I wish the guy luck, but I feel for whoever buys this thing at that price. It's just not worth that. I'd say it might be worth half that, maybe a little more on a sunny CA day.

amen & bless you

Please note that I'm ripping on the seller, not the car. The car is sweet. It has a few easy-to-fix issues, but the seller is misrepresenting the car, demonstrating ignorance of the terminology, and either demonstrating ignorance of the current market price, or intentionally misleading potential buyers. The seller uses the phrases "fully restored" and "completely restored and rebuilt with original parts." How is that car a restoration? A restoration of what? It's an extensively modified 2002 with a misleading Hartge emblem. It has some parts that first became available in the 2000's, a paint job that's not an original color, and though the paint looks great, the body panels, hood and glove compartment weren't assembled with the level of expertise that I would expect from "qualified experts." Hell, I've done a better job aligning the body panels, hood and glove compartment on my car and I'm an unqualified jackass.

There's nothing Hartge about the car in the photos or description except the emblem on the rear panel. The seller might as well have put on a turbo, ALPINA, Schnitzer, or Mercedes badge. This is equivalent to putting an M badge on a base model 3 series because you've added M-style pedal covers. It's cheesy, it's misleading, and it doesn't add value to the car, unless you really, gotta have a Hartge badge, in which case you might add $50 for the badge.

The seller listed a price and provided a description and photos in an attempt to justify that price. The car isn't a rare version of a 2002, and isn't noted as being otherwise remarkable. So the price justification is apparently based on the components and/or the quality/condition of the car. The components aren't rare, and nothing in the description or photos indicates that there's something special about the components that would justify a buyer paying an inordinate amount for them, individually or in conjunction with each other. As for the quality of the build, it has a great looking paint job, an apparently upgraded suspension, very nice interior, Weber 38/38, strut brace, big brakes, nice wheels...but nothing that would justify a price that's at least twice the going rate for a nicely modified 2002 in good condition. And as I noted above, the build quality demonstrated by the photos doesn't lend credibility to the seller's claims of value.

Do either of you really believe that the car in the Craigslist ad is worth $29,000 in today's market? If so, on what evidence are you basing that belief? Can you show me several other base model 2002s--not tiis, tis, Alpinas, Baurs, or other rare versions--that have been modified to a similar extent, that have actually sold for $29,000 in the past year? I haven't seen any heavily modified base model 2002s sell for half of that in the past 3 years since I joined the forum.

Well that's just not true at all.

I think you are eminently qualified.

;-)

(Trusting you will receive my comment in the manner intended -- meaning HUMOR).

Cheers,

Ray

Can't we all get along? ;-)

For the sake of conversation, my 74 tii turbo tribute barely broke $23K recently on ebay not meeting the reserve. I disclosed the reserve to the highest bidder (after he contacted me) who agreed to buy it. Which would have set the bar a little higher, but in typical fashion, he never followed-up to his commitment to buy. Worse is he's an FAQ'r out of Los Angeles.

Hey what about the polaris 69 M20 car that sold recently on eBay for $32K?

A car done right will sell for good money even in this market.

But what do I know

LOL. Guilty as charged.

For clarification, I was using "unqualified" in this case to mean "without caveats", e.g.

"I'm a jackass."

"Would the defendant care to qualify his statement in any way?"

"No, your honor; I'm an unqualified jackass."

I was going to use your turbo tribute as an example of the market not supporting the seller's price, but I couldn't find an end result for your auction. If your car can't command $29k, I would find it terribly hard to believe that the blue car on Craigslist could.

As another example, MrNavgtr's bored and stroked ITB beauty hadn't sold last I checked, and that was at an asking price roughly half that of the blue car. If I'd had even the remotest inkling of how much time, money and sweat equity I'd put into my car, I would have shopped a while longer and bought a well finished car like that, or like your turbo, or quite frankly, like the blue car on Craigslist. I just wouldn't pay anywhere near the Craigslist seller's asking price for it.
