a 1600 and a 1600-2?

The 1600s were 4-door Neu Klasse cars. The 1600-2 cars were the 2-door versions with the same 1.6L engine, however, most people called their 1600-2s "1600s" for simplicity. They later became known as 1602s.

The 1600-2/1602 chassis was later fitted with the 2L engine, becoming the 2002, which sold much better.

The way I understood it was the US Spec 1600-2s were badged as 1600 through about March 71 when the series changeover took place and these few remaining US spec 71s were badged 1602 until they were dropped from the model lineup. Per the VIN table in the FAQ, there were 232 of these cars produced.

I have a January 71 1600-2 that came with 1600 badges but I also have a 1602 badge that I can use when I'm feeling 02 envy.

marketed as 1600-2, but badged "1600". Sometime later (probably with the 1968 model year, coinciding with the 2002 introduction in the US market mid-year) the 1600-2 moniker was dropped in US advertising and they were just referred to as 1600's, probably because the NK sedans only sold in penny numbers here so confusion between the two and four door cars wasn't that much of a problem.

US 1600 (2 door) cars were always badged with 1600, not 1602; US 1600 sales ended in early 1971.

the 02 pictured has embossed front hood trim--same as its 1600 companion? I think that's the same press car that was used for all the early US car mag 2002 road tests--a polaris silver car with NJ plates...

Don't recall having seen a US spec 2002 with embossed hood trim; has anyone see that?
