I know what you mean, but I don't thinks its that. I had a E46 that got bumped in the rear and it develop that problem, On the E46, I was able to produce the noise with popping the clutch. On the 02, its really only during braking, and Im 99.9% sure its coming from the front. I'll keep poking around tho.

if your calipers are rusted out, and your using

aftermarket brake pads that arn't as well made as original

BMW JURID/Textar pad backing plates ? then you may have shifting pads

from foward to backward movement and the clunk - very common with

worn out disk brake components.
