Thank you for posting! It appears to be a 74-76 2002 Voll Cabriolet by Baur.

I have set up a page dedicated to collecting pics of 1600/2002 Baur Cabrios and Targas. As more and more pics are collected, I hope to identify them by location and set up some sort of map like we have done for other Baurs. Hopefully we will have a better understanding of how many there may be in the US, and how they are geographically distributed.

BWR PWR!

Tom, don't believe 2002 Voll Cabriolets were made in 1974-1976. And I think most were 1600s btw.

Here's that same shot opened up. My guess is it's a Targa or a chop-top.

That is a great point, Paul. I think you are right. I could not find a pic of a 74-76 Voll Convertible in my files. My error.

I was just basing it on what I could see in the dimly-lit pic, and of course the square taillights. I am eager to find some conclusive info on production numbers for the 1600/2002 Baurs by year if possible, but I havent found very much yet. Do you have a reference site with that info?

Wikipedia, FWIW, gives:

"Baur was established in 1910 and produced, among others, 1682 1600-2 Cabriolets, 200 2002 Cabriolets, 2597 E110 700 Sport Cabriolets and most of the 450 or so M1's (after Lamborghini could not fulfil its contractual obligations).

In 1971 they began production of the safer "targa" style body with the 2002."

Which, while hardly conclusive, tends to support what you said. I have also heard production numbers of 1963 Targas, but without a yearly breakdown.

I also found this:

http://www.cartype.com/pages/747/bmw_2002_targa__1975

BMW 2002 Targa

Only 1,963 were produced.

BMW produced a limited run of targa models referred to as the Baur convertibles. From '72-'75, they existed with targa-tops, a removable metal roof section over the front seats, and a soft fold-down rear window. All of the Targa models were 2002s.

1975 BMW Bauer 2002 Cabriolet Targa. Only 1,963 were produced.

The rare New Class convertibles were built for BMW by Baur (today, IVM Automotive) as a true cabriolet and as a Targa (roll-bar) model in 1600 and 2002 styles.

Mechanically, the convertibles are identical to the coupes, except they are two inches shorter than the coupes.

Baur's Targa version of the 02 series was introduced in 1971 for the European market. Few were imported into North America. The Targa model had a sunroof and a convertible rear windscreen.

The Targa had a built-in roll bar as a safety feature. The rear portion of the top folded down and the midsection was removable. The extra "hardware" added about 110 pounds to the vehicle's weight.

Without imposing too much.... could we request perhaps a little better pic of the red Palo Alto convertible to determine if it is indeed a Targa?

Much obliged! Thank you! Did he happen to mention if it looked like a Baur Targa.... i.e., removable hard top over front seats, soft top over the rear; body-colored roll bar in between the two?

I also have found this info in my files, which, if you can wade through it.... indicates that the full convertible did indeed end production in 1971. So the later examples would be Targas.

Conclusion: Paul is right. That is most likely a Targa in Palo Alto, or a custom convertible.

The 02 Series sports sedans came into being after the racing and rally successes of the Neue Klasse sedans. Despite BMW's still-tentative grip on profitability, a smaller, lighter and more compact 2-door version was penned under BMW's Design Director Wilhelm Hofmeister by in-house designers Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen.[3] Using Falkenhausen's remarkable M10 four-cylinder engine and chassis components, the 1600-2 (the -2 as in 2-door) or later, simply "1602" and "1600" made its debut at the Geneva auto show in 1966[4] and was sold through 1975. Power output of the M10 was up to 96 hp (72 kW) gross with 91 lb·ft (123 N·m) of torque. Within two years Road & Track was sufficiently impressed by the $2676 (US) 1968 1600 to call it "a great automobile at the price".

A limited-production cabriolet was produced by Baur from 1967 through 1971

. A 2-door sedan version, the 1600ti, featured the dual Solex PHH side-draft carburetors (as found on the 1800TI) and 105 hp (78 kW) for 1967 and 1968. A hatchback 1600 Touring model was produced in 1971 and 1972.

1969 BMW 1600 news, pictures, and information

During the crisis of the ‘50's, the 1500 was introduced and with its excellent suspension and striking design, became part of BMW's saving grace during that time period. A total of 334,165 models were produced during its two years of production. Following the 1800 series, a whole New Class sedan was launched during the Spring of 1964, the 1600.

The most legendary series ever introduced by BMW, the 1600 Series was introduced in the late 1960's. A total of 10,278 models were produced. Considered to ‘the best small sedan we ever drove' by the February issue of Car and Driver, the 1600 was reasonably priced and affordable to most at the time. At $2,500, the 1600 series was extremely economical with up to 30 mpg highway.

Beginning with the 1600-2, the two-door model, rolling off the runway, it was an instantaneous hit.

Derivatives of the 1600 were almost immediately introduced, a total of fourteen in all. Unfortunately the 1600 was unable to import, due to the 1968 twin carb engine and regulations from the U.S. Emission controls. The result was the largest four-cylinder engine being installed into the smallest body coupe. The pistons from the 1800 were used in the 1600 to enlarge the 1500's engine. The improvement updated the engine to 1.6 (1573 cc) and 85 hp (63 kW). The four door 1600 model was originally introduced in 1964 and continued to be produced until 1968.

In 1966, the 1602 or 1600-2 was introduced and continued to be sold until 1975. The 1602 came with an increased output of 96 hp (71 kW) and was sold at $2,676. The 1600ti was introduced from 1967 to 1971 and was a limited-production cabriolet that was produced by Baur and showcased the same dual Solex PHH side draft carburetors as on the 1800TI. The 1600ti boasted 105 hp. A total of 1,682 models were produced during it's four years of production. Produced from 1971 for one year, a hatchback 1600 Touring model was introduced briefly.

The 1600ti was discontinued soon after the release of the 2002, and the Cabriolet version was ended in 1971.

Maybe a Lumma convertible.

The car appears to be a Euro with the chrome bumpers.

Nice one, 02Les.

I'm completely sure he has no clue what a Baur Targa is....he has a 1988 e30 so his point of reference starts there and moves forward.

He just thought it was cute and sent me the pic...and all I asked was "Is it for sale?"

Followed by a response of "we don't have room for more cars, so no"

Maybe you can 'finesse' it from him, as My Cousin Vinny might say:

Blame it on me. Tell him that there is a Baur blogger who posts Baurs on his free 'Baurs For sale ' page for the benefit of the Baur and Baur-seeking community. You would like to do a public service by passing along the info to him. (Me.) I mean, after all, how could he be so crass as to think that you would be coveting that cute little red 2002 convertible for yourself? Nothing could be further from the truth! Your intent was obviously noble and above reproach.

Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Good luck with all that!

My money is on the Targa possibility: rear soft-top window looks about right, Euro bumper, probably a vinyl covering on the Targa bar section, etc. Just sayin'.

To me the rear side windows and rear windscreen look different from the Lumma convertible. The rear side windows almost look like glass -- that seems to meet up at the rear edge of the front side window. The rear windscreen shape is different.

What we need is a better picture.

Here's pics of a Lumma '73tii that was on Ebay a while back. This one looks very simliar.

Seems Lumma had differing designs for their tops, as shown by the pic of the Lumma '76 1502.

Note: Sellers stated these were Lumma conversions.

Many of the full cabrios (whether 1600 or 2002) were converted to square lights over the years due to TUV inspection requirements.

We have seen quite a few of them (mostly 1600's), inspected and driven them as they were on their way to new homes.

From the picture it looks like a full cab. Good eye either way.

We have an E30 targa and rusty 1600 voll cabrio here for work and will send along the spotting website link to hook the owners up.
