BMW 1600-2 Karmann Prototype

At the 1967 IAA, Karmann presented their own version of a convertible based upon a BMW 1600-2, this parallel to the convertible presented by Baur.

BMW had asked both Karmann and Baur to come with a suggestion/prototype convertible version of the 1600-2. The difference between both cars is easy to identify: the Karmann is a pure two-seater, a small triangle window in front of the doors, and a different top that completely sank behind the two front

seats. The top is tightened at the rear end with pushbuttons.

Also the small windows behind the doors are missing. The angle of the front window is exactly the same as the 02-sedan.

Standard were two Cox-seats, with integrated safety belts! Unique for that time!

Despite all, BMW choose Baur to build the BMW 1600-2 convertible.

The advantages of a Baur were: a four-seater instead of a two-seater, which means a better market perspective and cheaper to produce, as the Karmann chassis had a big impact on the costs.

The Karmann BMW was presented in a granada-colour.

Marco Luiten had it for sale back in 2003. Assume it has sold by now.
