Toyota recall largest since 2010

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating General Motors and Subaru for the same issue since the car manufacturers share a parts supplier. The recall is the largest since 2009 and 2010 when there were unintended acceleration recalls.

Problem with master switch

In the driver’s side door, there is a master switch that controls all the windows in the car. There is friction in the switch that can cause it to ignite and start a fire, according to the car maker. Before it is a problem, the switch will likely stick. The reason for this is that there was not enough grease put under the switch.

There were over 160 door fires reported and eight injuries which resulted in the recall.

The first sign was smoke, according to one driver:

The smoke immediately turned into flames, which caused poor visibility and complete panic. The flames caught the left side of my arm and started to burn my coat ... After exiting the vehicle, the flames quickly increased and began shooting into the air."

Grease is the word

The fix will just require owners to bring their automobiles to a dealership, such as Sandy Springs Toyota in Atlanta, Ga., and get the switch greased. All owners will be notified if they are affected in the next month.

If grease is all the vehicles are lacking, some owners are no doubt wondering if they can be able to just add some lubricant to the switch and be good to go. However, Toyota states that could be difficult. It said that “commercially accessible lubricants” could cause the switch to melt and that may also cause a fire.

Recall worries

Toyota is just recovering from the 2009 and 2010 recalls, which is why this can be a massive problem. According to Jeffrey Anderson from Experian Automotive:

"Toyota has done an outstanding job of regaining customer trust and getting repeat customers into its showrooms."

Toyota will have to tread lightly, however. Some of the versions on the recall list have also been previously recalled for unintended acceleration.
