engine and drivetrain engine id

Just bought a 70 02 and checking numbers found the engine is not a matching number, it is an april 71 engine. my car is a march 71 car but the blocks are slightly different. where the oil dipstick is located in my 71 is plugs into a boss in the block. on the engine in the parts car the 70, the dipstick plugs into an aluminum housing bolted onto the block. is this a key characteristic of later blocks? tii blocks? other

The aluminum bolt on housing used to be part of the smog pump bracket on early cars. Most have been chopped off, and possibly filed smooth. Very peculiar design. Here is a pic of my 68's engine just removed....you can see what my dipstick housing looks like.
