Why does my rear sit lower than the front? School me please.

Recommended Posts

So I ordered Eibach springs and Bilstein sports shocks. I just want a slight drop in the front. Have any of you Touring guys ever run 15" wheels? I am looking to get some Panasports or the Rota R20 Alpina clone. Don't want to run into an issue and I don't want to roll the fenders if I don't have to.

Steve, those wheels look great!

before you get too nervous,

remove all the junk out of the rear cargo area,

load up each front seat with 175 lbs,

roll and bounce the car for 10 feet,

and than look at it - on level ground.

Give us a photo of that then - please.

Just my $.02 worth....even with a lowered car there can always be a slight "illusion" of a lower rear due to the wheel well design, the rear opening being "flat" across the top whereas the front is "rounded". I know this has been mentioned before, but that really is the chief reason these cars can appear to sit low in the rear.

The addition of the front spacers for headlight height accentuates the lower rear look, and actually "does" make the profile look worse!...usually.

But, in the end, it still varies from car to car, due to springs/suspension set-up, wheel & tire setup, & the spacers. My '76 had spacers in the front and I didn't even realize it until I had Bilsteins installed by my mechanic...he called me to ask if I wanted them removed....of course I did! But that '02 looked rather "level" even with the spacers. Go figure.

When you say "all the junk" does that mean the spare tire? That is the only junk in my trunk. :)
