Radiator Replacement Options?

Walloth Nesch makes nice ones.  I have them in both of my cars and they work very well.  

 

There's several different ones.  I have the one with the high cooling rate in both of my tii's.  Their suggestion to use only with a 360mm fan blade is a good one.  Otherwise it cools too well.  I also use an 80 degree thermostat for the same reason.  Otherwise my cars ran too cool.  And you do need to have the proper lower hose.  Radiators for cars with air conditioning cost a lot more.  Check them out:

I have the same in both of my ‘02’s. I would not consider any other options after using the Walloth & Nesch HD. I’ve been an ‘02 owner for 49 years, including 46 years with my air conditioned ‘76. Been through lots of 3-row re-cores before the Walloth & Nesch. There are more recent discussions regarding the Walloth & Nesch HD, e.g.:

 

 


And despite its awesome performance, it looks dead stock (below, in my ‘76).

Sorry, Tom: didn’t intend to make you nervous! I’ll take a look at it, but only by placing it before the fuel pump would I be able to locate it in a straight-ish run of fuel line.

 

Your thoughts as to placing it before the fuel pump? It was there in the early days (photo below from August 1983).

No need to apologize... I've seen it in photos a few times and resisted the temptation to comment until now.

 

I've got a slightly larger version of a clear plastic filter installed before my pump, even though people say they should be mounted after the pump.  I have mine mounted back behind the manifold, where it seems like it might be a little cooler.

 

I also have a jeep filter with the double outlet mounted where your filter is, but it is steel and so it's not subject to bending/breaking.  It's also padded with a length of radiator hose to keep it from rubbing on the alternator.  The first filter is overkill, but I figure it is keeping the second one clean.  It never shows signs of dirt though, so I'll eventually remove it and just use the Jeep filter.

I like that fuel pump in your last photo.

Did the hoses on the tii connect appropriately or did you get a NEW special hose. 

Is there enough space for the original mechanical fan?

I believe all U.S.-spec tii’s (as well as 2002’s of the same vintage) received original radiators with the “angled and outboard” lower radiator hose outlet. The outlet was angled upward and moved outboard to better accommodate A/C compressors, with A/C becoming increasingly popular on U.S. cars — and Behr A/C first being offered — ca. 1972. There are now two different models of the Walloth & Nesch HD radiator: (1.) an early or European style and a (2.) later and U.S. or A/C style (a.k.a., angled and outboard). Before the latter version was offered, most of us modified the early style radiator to fit (many discussions of this in the Walloth radiator threads). Now, for a premium, Walloth & Nesch will do that for you.

 

Assuming you currently have the angled and outboard lower hose outlet, I’d recommend you either buy the premium-priced Walloth version or have a local radiator shop modify the standard version to match your current configuration.

 

Yes, the stock mechanical fan works with the Walloth radiator — assuming the stock mechanical fan works with an original radiator in your car. History and bad repairs have left a few ‘02’s tight for space even with a stock radiator.

I recently purchased a new radiator from W-N for my 73tii.  Three row core, angled lower outlet and bung for temp sensor. Pricey, but available.  It comes with a new cap and a clear overflow hose.

Having that bung is one of the other benefits of that radiator along with that angled outlet hose.  The cheaper version that I bought has the three row core, but no bung for a sensor or for draining it and has the straight outlet.  Does your car have AC Jim?  What do you use the sensor for?
